The Real Ghostbusters Box Set from Time Life Video

At the San Diego Comic Con this year I noticed that there were a large amount of people running around dressed as Ghostbusters. They were there, power packs and all. There was a huge Ghostbusters video game booth (see my coverage on this now delayed game). I just thought that perhaps I was seeing the same four guys or the same four costumes over and over again. After speaking with the Activision rep and finding out the sad news that Dan Aykroyd had cancelled his SDCC appearance I asked him how many “Ghostbusters” were actually Activison’s. He promptly replied, “We only brought four, we have counted over thirty”. I had no idea, until that moment how strong the Ghostbusters following is.
At the SDCC another Ghostbusters announcement had been made about the release of the complete The Real Ghostbusters DVD Collection. A twenty-five DVD set encompassing the complete animated series that would get fans excited for next year’s twenty-fifth anniversary of Ghostbusters movie. Add this to the official third story in the saga, played out in the new video game, and fall 2008 was looking like a good year for Venkman, Stantz, Spengler and Zeddmore.
After the video game sequel went to the “other side” the DVD box set disappeared off the radar. Well, the good people at Time Life sent me several episodes and, I’m glad to say, it is just as much fun as it was scary, (well, not really scary but still fun scary). The best part of the special features, of which there are twelve hours of, was seeing genre favorite writers J. Michael Straczynski and Michael Reaves speak about the writing of the series. One would think that this would be just another job to these guys but they had a great love for writing these characters. For any fan of the series or would-be writer these interviews are a must see.
What really stood out as I was watching “Take Two” (by Straczynski) and “The Collect Call of Cathulhu” (by Reaves) was not only how dark the series is but how I couldn’t get past the fact that Arsenio Hall was Winston Zeddemore and Lorenzo Music who played Peter Venkman was also Garfield. Closing your eyes for just a second you would either expect to open them and see a talk show host or fat orange cat. Both actors do a great job bringing their characters to life but in hindsight it is pretty strange.
With the Ghostbusters game in limbo and the on again, off again rumor of an actual third film circulating The Real Ghostbusters DVDs are as good as it is going to get. Seven seasons and over fifty-five hours of ghostbusting should get any fan through the next few years. I am looking forward to seeing the guys go up against Samhain in both "When Halloween was Forever" and "Halloween II½". Samhain was always a great villain for the series and one of the few reoccurring baddies. I always thought that the guys catching Scrooge’s Christmas Carol Ghosts was a bit out there in “X-Mas Marks the Spot” but nonetheless it still had some great humor to it. My all time personal favorite episode was the one that showed what happened right after the first movie called “Citizen Ghost”. Finally an explanation as to why they all had different colored costumes.
If this is your holy grail The Real Ghostbusters doesn’t disappoint. It is however, only available through The Real Ghostbusters DVD web site. Even after watching all the episodes there will still be plenty of special features that will get you through this life and the next.

I really liked this show as a kid. Sometimes it was a little weird and gross, but it was always fun to watch. I was also a little disturbed as a kid that Garfiled and Venkman had the same voice. Arsenio didn't bother me, I thought he did a great job. It did always bother me why they at least couldn't get Ernie Hudson to voice Winston, it is not like he was doing anything else at the time. Murray, Ackroyd, Ramis, would have cost too much for the show, but Hudson and Annie Potts? Come on they were availiable. I eventually will buy this set, but not for what time life wants. It will get cheaper and then it will be mine.
