Who Had the Right Stuff?

The Right Stuff Blu-ray arrives 11-5-13

The Right Stuff arrives today from Warner Brothers with the 30th Anniversary Edition on Blu-ray. It was just a few weeks ago that our own Rob Vaux eloquently put the film’s scope and impact in perspective (read the Fall of 83: The Right Stuff here). I wanted to address another aspect of the film and the personal and still reaching effect it had on me.

The Right Stuff was one of the first films my father had ever taped off of cable. He even recorded the intermission. He shared it with my brother and me. For the two of us, it made history come to life. Chuck Yeager, Alan Shepard, and Gordo Cooper were all very real to me. The actors’ portrayals of these historical figures didn’t have to be spot on. I wasn’t from thet era that watched the space race. No, I grew up in an era of Star Wars, Space Shuttle’s named Enterprise, and museums populated with all these historical crafts. After watching The Right Stuff my Dad took us to the Air and Space Museum in Washington DC. Having the foreknowledge of the space race suddenly made the sight of Chuck Yeager’s X-1 have a deep, profound impact on me. That was the ship! I still hear the music in my head from Bill Conti incredible score whenever I walk into the Air and Space Museum, or whenever I take off in an airplane.

A profound sense of history is what I got in watching The Right Stuff. What transcended that was this collection of actors that suddenly seemed to be everywhere. I had no clue who Dennis Quaid was or Fred Ward. When I saw them on the big  screen or on TV, they were still Gus and Gordo to me. Yet, as the years have passed, these actors have populated some of Mania’s greatest genre films. Apparently, they all have the right stuff in one way or another.

Being a child of the eighties, I had the privilege of living during the dawn of cable and the birth of the home video industry. Though many of these actors had been in previous projects that pre-dated The Right Stuff, I was exposed to many of these films for the first time in the eighties.

Ed Harris (John Glenn) is a man who has at least three space movies to his credit. I didn’t even think twice upon hearing his Mission Control in Gravity. It only made sense. However, imagine my surprise when I saw Creepshow for the first time and he was dancing at the Father’s Day Party. Though in both The Abyss and Needful Things, he returned to that hero I saw for the first time in The Right Stuff. He is always that guy that gives 100%.

Dennis Quaid (Gordon Cooper) was probably the only actor in the film that played a more egotistical version of himself. I do not know what the real Gordo Cooper was like, but, to me, he will forever be as Quiad played him. It must have been a crazy year for Quaid as Jaws 3D only came out a few month before. Thankfully, Jaws 3D was first and quickly forgotten. There are two roles that would quickly break him out of The Right Stuff role for me, yet they were very similar to Gordo Cooper. The first was his role of Willis Davidge in Enemy Mine. As a space fighter pilot, Davidge must learn to survive with his hated enemy as they are stranded on a deserted planet. This cocky pilot finds both his soul and his humility much like Gordo did by the end of The Right Stuff. Then we come to Innerspace. A cocky pilot (again, not a stretch), Lt. Tuck Pendleton, is injected into the human body. A basic one man show has Quiad acting with TV monitors. He really sells us on his desperation to survive and save those he cares about.

Fred Ward (Gus Grisson) played the tragic astronaut of the original Mercury 7 team. Perhaps writer/ director Phillip Kaufman saw his tragic motorcycle racer trapped in time in Timerider: The Adventure of Lyle Swann and thought he’d make a good Gus. Thankfully, I only saw Timerider recently and didn’t wonder, back in 1983, why Lyle Swann was with the Mercury 7 Astronauts. The tragic roles kept on coming for Ward and I definitely  remember my Dad taking to me to Gus Grisson in an action movie called Remo Williams: The Adventures Begins. You may or may not understand how sad I was that the adventures of the Destroyer never continued on the big screen.

This is only scratching the surface of the great actors that are in The Right Stuff. Blink and you’ll miss Bishop (Lance Henriksen) from Aliens as Wally Shirra. The Fly himself, Jeff Goldblum, and Ned Flanders (Harry Shearer) are the two NASA recruiters. Though, none us will care to see the original Red Skull (Scott Paulin) with his mask off, who played Deke Slayton.

The Blu-ray is populated with history and special features to make fans of the film go crazy. The transfer is incredible and even a lot of the archival footage looks good, as well. This is a great film to pick up for the collection as well has give as a gift. As far as historical and inspiring films go, this film has the right stuff. Though, let us not forget the great collection of actors that brought a time and place to life that now all generations will remember.

I want to get Boy Meets World The Complete Series!  and Saved By the Bell Complete series drops next week, and I want that too.  Wish they were on Blu Ray.  Gonna wait for them to drop in price before I get them though.  Here's to Black Friday delivering.

Btw, the Toys R Us Black Friday ad leaked online, and they got a few movie deals, check it out.  Don't think they are worth going to Toys R Us for but it might be for you.

I'm not picking up The Hobbit until they release all 3 in a set like they did for LOTR, or in a 6 movie set since I don't have the LOTR extended editions on Blu.

^^^ What Hanso said.  I was tricked before and own too many versions of TLOR series....extended box set only for me!!

I ordered the Extended Edition Hobbit from Amazon yesterday.  Don't really care for any combined 6 disc sets.  I got the Extended Trilogy LOTR on Bluray, but these extended cuts, I'll just get as they come along.  My main reasoning being that like the original Extended DVDs that came out a decade ago, I like to collect the exclusive statue gift set.  Not digging that it's an Amazon exclusive this go round, but what can you do.
