DVD Shopping Bag: Se7en on Blu-ray

What’s in the Blu?

By Robert T. Trate     September 14, 2010

David Fincher’s Se7en arrives on Blu-ray
© New Line

Raise your hand if you bought David Fincher’s Se7en on DVD when it first came out. Anyone else remember the bitch of that DVD? You had to turn it over! Unfortunately, I still have one or two DVD’s from those days and it is always a treat to have the mood totally broken to watch the rest of a film.
Those days of flipping of DVDs are long gone and the two disc collector’s series as Fincher’s modern classic Se7en is now on Blu-ray. I did upgrade to the New Line Platinum Series Edition of Se7en back in 2000. A definitive edition, if there ever there was one. The sad news about the Blu-ray is that it is exactly the same as that edition in its special features. I was a little wary that the package wouldn’t have that same impact as the Platinum Series. New Line kept the packaging intact and actually expanded upon it. Yet, there is nothing new for the in special features on this Blu-ray. Since, those are the same let’s get right to the most important thing, the transfer.
The transfer is simply amazing. The rain soaked streets, the Fincher greens, even the color of the blood is better in 1080p. Everything is exactly as it should be. Thankfully Fincher supervised the transfer himself. I was looking for something new for me on this Blu-ray and decided to listen to the commentary track featuring David Fincher, Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman. The sad thing about the commentary is that it is edited. Freeman is completely alone where as Pitt and Fincher are together. To hear the dynamic of the director and his two stars would have been interesting. Freeman’s talk with us is both introspective and informative about how he developed the character. It was as if he was on The Actor’s Studio. Any fan of Freeman or aspiring actor will enjoy what he has to say.
Fincher and Pitt’s commentary is both laid back and informative. Clearly these two guys are buddies as they have a comradery. With the benefit of hindsight we all know it lead to collaborations with Fight Club and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. They both discuss the number of production days (55), as well, as the discrepancies of how Kevin Spacey was cast for the part. What I found interesting was their mention of the one scene that is usually cut from the TV version. It is the bar side chat between Mills and Somerset. It is a favorite scene for both of them and contains no harsh language or violence. Another great behind the scenes moment is revealed when Fincher talks about the test audience and how they were lured into the film. “Come see a new film starring Brad Pitt from Legends of the Fall and Morgan Freeman from Driving Miss Daisy”. One woman wanted to kill Fincher just for making the movie. Other random facts come out from Fincher such as John Doe’s books cost $15,000 dollars to have it made. R. Lee Ermey originally auditioned for John Doe but graciously accepted the role of the Police Captain instead. The oddest fact I found was learning that Pitt’s kicking in door moment was the inspiration for the Men in Black trailer.
The commentary was incredible but one moment in the film superseded everything else being said. The ending, even without hearing the dialogue, it was still just as powerful. I was in awe of the performances all over again. It has been 15 years since the first time I saw Se7en and I have watched it countless time since, but I was still sucked in to the story. As I struggled to turn off the commentary I found that I could remember each and every line. Each one of Pitt’s “what’s in the box” still hurts. Se7en on Blu-ray is worth the re-buy even if you have the New Line Platinum Series Edition. Yes, the special features are the same but the movie is still powerful and looks better than it ever did before.

I see LOTR is in individual editions on Blu.

Remember Maniacs, DON'T GET IT.

I very briefly forgot how bad they were (technically speaking) but a quick search for Bob's article reminded me of why I didn't fall for it the first time.

Just a possible thought Bob, now that Blu-Ray is often featured, maybe it's time to say "Blu\DVD Shopping Bag?"

I'll definitely be picking up Se7en and I'm definitely waiting for the Extended versions of LOTR, whenever they are released.

Se7en is one of the best psychological, character-driven films of the last 20 years. This will definitely be a marquee addition to any collection....

As for LOTR, I'll rent them on blu-ray first, and wait for the ultra uber George Lucas inspired extended enhanced polished versions before I buy.....but man if ROTK wasn't un Sunday night and had me Riding for the World's End! That scene is just too powerful for words
