Was she a Borg Spy?

By Robert T. Trate     April 30, 2013
Source: Mania.com

It was a crazy time for the cast, crew, and fans of Star Trek: The Next Generation. When those final moments arrived in season 3, I literally went out of my mind with questions. The first being, was Patrick Stewart leaving the show? I was three years in and in deep, or at least what I thought was deep at that point. As you can see, The Next Generation was my show. I made this honest effort to watch it every week. My best friend and I were Trekkies and we spent the better part of the summer and early fall of 1990 discussing the possibilities.

That is what you did, then. You talked about a show and watched the episode over and over again. Well, if you were smart enough to tape it. My most outlandish theory was that Lt. Commander Shelby (Elizabeth Dennehy) was, in fact, a Borg spy. There was just something about those looks and her knowledge of the pieces, which she had never encountered, that didn’t sit right with me. In the early fall of 1990, I had resolved my issues that Stewart was leaving the show. Like I said before, it was a different world.

That different world didn’t include the internet. Today it would have been leaked that Stewart signed on for 4 more seasons of the show. Scenes from season four’s “Family” would have surfaced or just the a picture of a very human Picard probably would have popped up on Instagram. That summer drove me crazy and that is the best part of watching CBS’ and Paramount’s “The Best of Both Worlds” Blu-ray. You get to relive all those memories.

It says something about how monumental “The Best of Both Worlds” is with its single packaging of both episodes with no break. It also had its own Fathom event screening last week. Think about it. How many TV season box sets jump ahead and give you the first episode of the next season. “The Best of Both Worlds” is some of the very best of what Star Trek: The Next Generation did.

The special edition Blu-ray is set with all the bells and whistles of a regular feature length film. There is audio commentary from the director, Cliff Bole, as well as guest star, Elizabeth Dennehy. A new featurette, “Engaging the Borg” highlights the cast and crew’s thoughts on the monumental episode. Even Stewart’s own apprehension and fear of being written out are discussed. It is Michael Dorn, however, that sums it up perfectly with his little advice for actors on cliff hangers. Once again, Paramount has included a Gag Reel. These behind the scenes moments are the perfect window into the actors of characters we consider family. It’s great to see them laugh and crack up during moments that had us on the edge of our seats.

Finally, we come to the Blu-ray transfer. The best litmus test happens when you watch the episode bumpers. These incredibly dated TV trailers are not up-converted and show what the wear and tear of time can do to now classic television. The show, itself, looks like a late Eighties/early Nineties relic. However, when you watch the actual episode, it is a whole other story. The cast and crew of the Enterprise lives and breathes in a way they never did before. It is such a startling transfer that it guarantees this generation for the next.

We briefly had this on our display TV's at work yesterday (before our bosses decided we needed to push a new, incredibly shitty cartoon.). The transfer is truly stunning, almost too good as matte paintings become obvious and several cast members age about 10 years in the harsh light of HD.

You could really see the make up difference on Spiner face. Especially around the eyes and ears!

I priced matched this at Best Buy yesterday (Amazon had it for $14.99) and for some reason the gal at the register rang it up for $10!!  I did not correct her error.

I'm not so sure the tv trailers are a good litmus test for quality.  Usually those old bumpers are dubbed over and over (copies of copies) or even worse end up being pulled from VHS recordings from the original broadcast.  Not saying the transfer isn't amazing as it definitely is (as have been the transfers on all the TNG seasons so far).  But I see these episodes on SD or even upconverted HD stations on my U-Verse and while not as chrisp and clean as the blu-rays, they aren't nearly as bad as you'd think.

RobertTrate  Cast members age more than that,  when you see them in person...yikes

I own a copy of STTNG:BORG , and it really shows how aged these two shows were . I wouldn't waste money on a Blu Ray , but I am happy with all the older films upgraded such as Combat tv show and The Enforcer
