Tangled Thoughts

If seeing Disney’s Tangled in this week’s DVD Shopping Bag is a shock then you are not alone. This columnist saw this film over Unstoppable upon their initial releases. Why? For one Unstoppable looked like Jan de Bont’s Speed on a train. The other was to aggravate my friend who hated Disney animated musicals. If you took note of the past tense in the last sentence it was hated. Years of denouncing Aladdin, The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast were all for not. He loved Tangled and damn it, I did too.
Two grown men on a Wednesday afternoon sitting with a theater full of kids sounds a bit creepy. We are theater aficionados and we knew the risks of seeing Tangled during daylight hours. Little kids upon little kids crying, screaming, and parents who run the steps more than sit and watch the movie. The story of Tangled is nothing more than “Rapunzel” by the Brothers Grimm. To begin with the trailers made it look terrible. Clearly this was going to be Disney’s Twilight movie and the whole Robert Pattinson smolder moment didn’t help either. Nevertheless Tangled was our movie of the afternoon and with the first song my buddy turned to me and said, “You never said this was a musical”. I knew it was but Speed with a train looked about as thrilling as Speed 2: Cruise Control. The opening songs are not the best work that Alan Menken has done. They lack that classical musical approach that much of his earlier work has had. This was a more modern musical and despite its fairy tale setting, a more modern tale.
With each passing moment I found myself more and more drawn into Rapunzel’s world. She is easy to identify with as is the character of Flynn Rider. Both are looking for their place in the world and neither is happy where they are. The villains are clever, sinister but not so wicked that they lack a sense of humor. Mother Gothel and the Stabbington Brothers have driven purposes and aren’t just wicked for the sake of it. By far the most interesting character is Maximus, the Captain of the Guard’s horse. Easily, he could have been over done but the animators and storytellers bring Maximus to life in a way few non-speaking Disney characters have been done before. Not wanting to spoil anything further, just sit back and watch Maximus eat up the scenery in Tangled.
With all Disney stories of this nature there is always a love story. This can make or break the tale at hand. Much like Mulan, Tangled places this into a secondary plot. Sure Flynn Rider is the love interest but Rapunzel’s struggles have little to do with meeting Mister Right. Oddly enough, it is the guy that falls for the girl first and not the other way around.
The animation in Tangled is incredible. A blend of not only brilliant paintings but CGI that has become the standard for Disney’s high end pictures (unlike the mess that is Mars needs Moms). I did not see the film in 3D nor felt as if I needed to watch it ever in 3D. It is released today in the 3D format. This is just another ploy to get more money out of us for the latest fad.
Thankfully, in the second act the film’s music is on par with the film’s story. It was almost as if Menken phoned in the opening numbers. "I've Got a Dream" has quickly become a musical number I cannot wait to see at Disney World. Its cast of characters invokes the very best of Monty Python and their return to the story, though obvious, is cheered not frowned upon.
Tangled with be available for a brief time as any Disney animated film is. Before you know it Tangled will be back in the vault. Yet, I have to ask does “the vault” even matter anymore? I now have it on Blu-ray and DVD and could transfer it to my computer enabling me to watch it indefinitely. It might be time for Disney to re-think their vault status.

Alright, everybody now:  "Soylent Green is People!  It's made out of People!"

I liked Tangleed more than I expected.  At first, it looked like one of the lesser Disney animated films.  Now I think it is one of the best in quite a while.

Now we can watch Black Swan over and over again to see if we can spot when Natalie Portman is dancing and when it is her double.  Apparently, there seem to be some disagreement over how much of it is really her.  I love how Mila Kunis stood up for Portman with these accusations.

Doesn't Topsy-Turvy come out today on Criterion as well? Definitely one of the best films in a while.

redhairs99 3/29/2011 9:44:11 AM

Ummmm, How about a spoiler ALERT there, jppintar!

jppintar326 3/29/2011 1:54:22 PM

Like anybody doesn't know that twist by now.

macrocosmic 3/29/2011 7:51:08 PM

Tangled is cute, but how anyone can like it more than The Lion Kind, Beauty and the Beast or Aladdin is beyond me.

themovielord 3/30/2011 6:00:36 AM

He just out right refused to watch them!

karas1 3/30/2011 7:12:41 AM

Sit your friend's a$$ down and MAKE him watch them.  They are wonderful movies.  And make him see The Little Mermaid while he's tied down.

XeroWarp 3/30/2011 11:43:07 AM

I hope your joking, redhair. Psst...Darth Vader is really Lukes Aunt. My family loved , Tangled. I thought Tangled was on par with Train your Dragon. Definately better than any offerings from Pixar lately.

redhairs99 3/30/2011 6:44:53 PM

Yes, XeroWarp, I was joking.  The film's a classic and I've seen it many times.  I was just being a sarcastic.
