DVD Shopping Bag: The Terminator Blu-ray Book

Updating the Library

This week, in the DVD Shopping Bag, there is little to pick from in our favorite genres. It is true that Battle: Los Angeles arrives this week but it doesn’t even make to our top 5 picks. Don’t get us wrong, Battle: Los Angeles is a great mash up of Blackhawk Down and Independence Day but it doesn’t make our library. Instead we reserve that right for Heavy Metal, The Herculoids, and Point Break. If you are a fan of Marvel Knights: Spider-Woman, hold out a week or two longer because a Blu-ray combo pack with Iron Man is due out soon.
As of late we have been upgrading the library here at Mania and trying to keep all the multiple editions of our favorite films straight. A week or so ago MGM and Fox released James Cameron’s The Terminator on Blu-ray. It comes in the hard bound book edition packed with photos and trivia. While price checking this edition (Amazon and Half.com) we discovered that The Terminator had already been released on Blu-ray before. What made this edition so different?
The New Evil Dead
Anyone a fan of Sam Raimi’s classic horror film will know exactly what we are talking about. Since The Terminator franchise has changed hands so many times everyone has their own edition. This goes for Terminator 2: Judgment Day as well. I started to sort out the various covers and special features and found that this edition is exactly the same as the 2006 version. Well everything is the same except one says Sony and MGM where as the other says Fox and MGM.
Prepare to be Terminated
We never bought the 2006 edition as we were still waiting out the Blu-ray/ HD DVD battle. Thankfully, the Blu-ray here is incredible, if you just watch the movie itself. To fully appreciate what the self proclaimed “King of the World” did back in 1984 one has to watch the special features. “Creating the Terminator: Visual Effects and Music” is a treasure trove of helpful tips for any budding young film maker. With very little money and time Cameron took all the tricks he learned from Roger Corman and established a new genre called Tech Noir. Here one will learn the benefits of atmospheric haze and walnut dust. Mix that with exactly how much forced prospective was used as well and front and rear projection. However, the true treat is the tanker scene. Those secrets have to be seen to be believed.
Terminated Scenes
With any film there are always pieces that end up on the cutting room floor. Usually these moments or extended scenes belong there. For The Terminator we find a character arc that was cut for Lieutenant Ed Traxler (Paul Winfield). Witness the development of the plan to take down Cyberdynethat Sarah (Linda Hamilton) follows through on in T2. Let us also mention plans for Sarah and Kyle (Michael Biehn) to go to Disneyland. All these make an interesting trip to what could have been, but Cameron’s Terminator is perfect as is.
Love Child, Be Gone
We thought that this viewing of The Terminator would bring a twinge of dislike for Arnold Schwarzenegger. With celebrities personal lives becoming less and less personal it really does ruin the enjoyment of classics such as these. Has anyone else tried to watch Braveheart or perhaps even Navy Seals lately? All right the last one was a joke, but thankfully The Terminator is more Cameron’s movie than Arnie’s now. If you don’t have this Tech Noir classic then by all means pick up this edition. It is an essential classic for you library.

My off hand guess is that this new Terminator release is a better bluray transfer.  Don't know if you remember but everyone was beeching about the bad transfer when the other came out so there is a good chance they fixed it with the new release.   The same thing happened with Gladiator, in the first release of 2009 the transfer was so bad they actually deleted special effects shots.  They released it again in 2010 a year later with a correct, better bluray transfer and called it the remastered edition.

I am going to redbox Battle LA...just way too many mixed reviews on that one to buy it.

Would have been nice to have a special Edition where they replace the Terminator stop motion animation scenes with the latest CGI. Oh well.

VTGamehendge 6/15/2011 10:43:03 AM

I agree, Hobbs.  I'm adding Battle:  LA to my Netflix queue as we speak.

redhairs99 6/15/2011 5:26:54 PM

Is that another re-release of Heavy Metal?  It came out on Blu-Ray like 2 or 3 months ago.  That's when I bought it at least.

And this Terminator came out the week before Memorial Day.  Best Buy had the other other release marked down to $9.99 while the new "book" edition was $24.99.  The problem for Best Buy was that they had like 20 copies of the new release sitting behind the $9.99 sticker price and the old release was no where in sight, so I got the new one for $9.99!
