E3 2002: Squaresoft
By: James StevensonDate: Thursday, June 20, 2002
We had a problem at this year's E3, we couldn't find Square's booth! Apparently, with only two titles to show, the company made a deal with Sony and decided that putting its RPGs on display there would be the best bet. But in the end, we did get a chance to play around with the upcoming titles, our report is below.
KINGDOM HEARTS - PlayStation 2 - Fall
KINGDOM HEARTS is Square's joint project with Disney Interactive to combine favorite characters from classic Square games along with some new ones, and then toss in Disney characters and situations. The result is a nostalgia trip with excellent Squaresoft gameplay, fantastic graphics and a beautiful soundtrack. The game will also feature the voice-talent of some major stars such as Haley Joel Osment (THE SIXTH SENSE) and Sean Astin (THE LORD OF THE RINGS). This is one of the best upcoming RPGs for PlayStation 2 owners this fall.
FINAL FANTASY XI - PlayStation 2 - TBA
This Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game was featured at Sony's booth with the full keyboard setup in tow. It was kinda hard to get into with all of the Japanese text, but the world looks very immersive. The biggest problem may be getting gamers to step up to the plate to drop the money for the network adapter, hard drive, and monthly fees. Even we're not so sure if it's worth it.
