Variety is reporting that Lucasfilm and Disney have signed a ten year deal with EA games to produce non-movie related Star Wars games. Here is what EA’s chief financial officer Blake Jorgensen had to say on the deal.

“We’ve done movie games over the years and we wanted to make sure that we weren’t doing a movie game, i.e., game based on the movie,” at the UBS Global Technology Conference on Tuesday. “The beauty of the ‘Star Wars’ franchise is that it’s so broad and so deep, you don’t have to do a movie game, you can do a game that’s very focused on the world that’s been created around ‘Star Wars.’”

This great news for Star Wars and gamer fans. The best Star Wars games have always been outside of the movies. Well except maybe for Super Empire Strikes Back for the NES. Games such as Knights of the Old Republic and Battlefronts have always been more popular with the fans.

The other news that Variety reported was a released tear from the long awaited Star Wars: Battlefronts sequel, simply titled Star Wars: Battlefront. DICE, Visceral Games and BioWare are currently developing the game for EA, with it expected to be released in 2015, the same year Disney and Lucasfilm unspool Star Wars: Episode VII on December 18.

I was hoping that Battlefront would be more like an MMOFPS, where you can jump[ into epic battles with huge maps, but where the classes actually had meaning, I.E. only pilots can use ships, etc.

and unlike the recent Battlefield games levelling up is more than just getting better weapons and each class has it's own skills, scouts for example being more agile with better reflexes for using speeder bikes...
