EARTH STANDS STILL A Few Months Later

The remake to the science fiction classic THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL has been delayed from the summer 2008 season to December 2008, says Box Office Mojo. The decision to delay the project seems understandable as production has yet to begin for director Scott Derrickson and the only casting announcement we have seen is Keanu Reeves as the famed "Klaatu" alien who tries to warn the human race of our dangerous ways. This delay in release will give the studio more time for the principal photography and post production.

Plot Summary: An alien known as Klaatu (Keanu Reeves) and his giant robot Gort arrive on the Washington D.C Mall with a warning towards humans for their destructive ways. Unfortunately, communication with the natives prove to be difficult for Klaatu.

THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL now hits theaters December 12, 2008.

What a crock! With so many original stories in sci-fi literature that haven't been ruined by Hollywood yet why are they deciding to deface one of the handful of good sci-fi movies ever made?

I hope everyone connected with this to DIAF.

I love Keanu, and i like the original. I know most people think Keanu is wooden, but he can be pretty good when given the chance. He was very good in Thumbsucker. And let us not forget My Own Private Idaho. And the whole remake thing,,,,if you dont like it, dont watch it,,,,remaking the original if you love it so much doesnt mean you HAVE to see it. Remakes have been going on since the beginning of cinema. Get over it. Go to the IMDB and see for yourself how many movies are remakes.

I hate this idea as much as ANY piece of classic Hollywood that is being "remade" or "re-envisioned" for a new generation of movie goers. What a load of crap! TDTESS is one of the all-time greatest science fiction movies ever. It's right there along with Forbidden Planet. And I hope to HELL they don't decide to remake that one too! I'd heard a while back that some studio was considering remaking The Andromeda Strain, but due to pressure from Wise, the original director, Michael Crichton, the author, and many fans of the movie, they have dumped that project, for now. Lets hope the producers of this remake have major problems, and decide to cancel this remake too!

And WhiskeyMovie, it's not that it's a remake so much as that Hollywood's recent foray into remaking these films has been lackluster, at best. They are actually RUINING the original idea by trying to add a bunch of FX and the acting isn't up to par! Example: One of John Carpenter's best horror flicks he did was The Fog. Simple. Scary. No Gore(for the most part). Visuals were what they needed to be. Then, Hollywood does a remake, and we have a TERRIBLE movie, with over-the-top FX for the "fog" itself, and the story is even changed, somewhat. THAT is what I personally hate about these new "modern remakes". Unlike when in 1978, we got a remake of the '50's classic, Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Some say the '78 version is the best of the two. THEN, we get 4 more takes on it, with the dismal "The Invasion" being the latest. THAT is the point I'm making about the recent rash of remakes coming out of Hollywood. It seems they no longer care about CONTENT or the STORY, just jee-wizz FX and mindless plots! Much like Hollywood's "regular" films!

I've said it before and I'll say it again. As long as remakes and TV adaptations continue to make money, they will continue to be made. Even if only 1 in 10 makes money, that's decent enough odds in Hollywood that someone will take a chance. The problem is, every once in a while, someone will make a decent remake and people go see it.

Quit griping and give it a chance. If it suck oh well it is not like they are going to torch all of the copies of the original. Chances are you will get a special edition DVD of the original with a free ticket to see the new one. Then you get a tricked out version of the classic and you can go gripe about how the new one does not compare for free.

This movie can be incredible. 1st thing end the movie with GORT wiping out the population. Destroy all the politicians in Washington, Iraq, England, worldwide-etc. Then GORT goes and wipes out the American Idol audience and a crowd of a special showing of PIGFORMERS. Afterwards he hunts down anyone who has ever associated themselves with American Idol.

This could be a very dark companion to IDIOCRACY.

The original is a huge favorite of mine, but I wouldn't mind seeing a remake, as long as it's still set in the same timeframe. I doubt it'll resonate as much as the original because of the state of the world when the original was made, but it could still be a great remake if put into the hands of a production team who will treat it with the respect it deserves.

What this announcement really means is that this movie won't be shot until after the strike. And no one knows how long that will last. December 2008 is more like a hope than a commitment.

In principle I don't mind remakes. If it comes from another medium (novel, comic, play, etc.) or an obscure original movie and a new filmmaker can bring his own inspired vision and nuances to it.
It's just that the past few years of remakes of usually horror and now more classics or near-classics, some barely 20 years old puts the business way ahead of the show in show business. They are in effect showing a kind of contempt for the moviegoer. "You are sheep with dollars in your hand and we will throw many familiar names in your faces sometimes with little care for a quality project because we know you'll go see it and line our pockets."
I just don't like being blatantly thought of that way.
