Summit Entertainment has captured their third box office record for The Twilight Saga: Eclipse after a full day of release. To stand alongside their previous two records ($30 million midnight tally and most theaters booked), the studio's latest installment has become the highest Wednesday opener of all-time by taking in $68.5 million on its first day. The previous record holder was Paramount's Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, which grabbed $62 million last summer.
Wednesday record or not, it still isn't the best opening day record of the Twilight franchise. "New Moon" premiered on a Friday with $72.7 million. In terms of single-day opening records, "Eclipse" is now in second place behind its 2009 predecessor. And in third place is the previous champion The Dark Knight with $67.2 million.
The single-day achievement also means that Summit Entertainment has basically made its production cost back in a single day. Barring the promotional costs, the production is listed at $68 million in coin.
We'll have more as the numbers come in throughout the weekend.
