God I wish they'd hurry up and finish the OVAs so we can get them dubbed.  I refuse to watch Hellsing any other way.

with the hellsing ova at june 22 you can bet for a october- december release date for funimation. Unless they hit some type of major snafu. I was hoping for summer but beggers cant be choosers

I feel the same way Aeon but after getting hooked on GOSICK in subtitled form I woudlnt mind hearing the Japanese audio too.

I was hoping for a half season set but rumor mills have been saying that it will be a complete collection so we may have to wait until ova 10 is released-

oh well we can still get our vampire fix with dance in the vampire bund if funi ever releases it. I can also look forward to high school of the dead

Here are the only reasons to prefer dubs:

You can't read and watch at the same time.

You can't be bothered to take the 15 seconds needed
to iGoogle or Wiki whatver word or phrase you want.

You have no respect for content, only form.

You have no interest in anything not "Americanized"

You are lazy [i.e.]

You honestily believe that America, and by extension yourself, is the belly-button of existance.

I swear I do not know why I joined this site. I only come here when something interesting in Animenews pops up, and I always end up getting pissed off at the comments.

I STILL cannot believe that the majority of American anime fans prefer dubs to subs. What is the reason? Are the majoirity of you even aware that, when you watch a release from FUNimation or Bandai or whoever, you are watching a ,show that has been, literally, butchered, censored, and "edited for time". Jokes, character development, plot points.... hell, all the CHARM gets sucked out.

ScrappedAeon refuses to watch Hellsing subbed, huh? Too bad, you are missing out on a fine story. And I guarantee that the story YOU finaly see will not be the same story everyone else saw.

Yeah guys, High School of the Dead was cool...8 months ago. Am I really in that much of a minority? I will take a sub over a dub any day. A lot is missed, (read: purposely cut, re-written, censored or just dumbed-down). As for the actual dubbing itself, I simply hate the tendency of the US licensors to give female characters the same-sounding adults-who-can't-do-kid-voices and forced high-pitched voice. The high-pitched voice sounds great in Japanese, where the language is almost musical, but in English it usually sounds like nails on the chalkboard.

Bandai has released the first English dub of K-ON! I watched the trailer and it was just as vomit-inducing as I had imagined. But what I found interesting was that, when I voiced my opinion of the voice actors (Yui and Ritsu in particular), I was pummeled by like 12 people within an hour. One wag even declared that "most dubs are as good, and sometimes better(???) than the original". HUH??? Yui's warm 'n snuggly call of 'Ricchan' became Ritz. Ritz? It just grates...like nails on a chalkboard. I simply can't get past it. Characters ARE dialogue. Yui would never say Ritz. I mean, if that's the case, shouldn't you change the character's NAMES while you're at it? Yui should be Susie? Ritsu should be Rita, etc.? Will thy call Azu-nyan 'Azu-meow'? (pfft. they probably will)

In fact, why call it K-ON!! at all? That's some 'gratuitous Japanese' there. Re-name the show Light Music. And, oh, they should go ahead and just say they are in Cali instead of Japan, since we certainly don't want anything Japanese in our anime, right?

And the current "no honorifics" trend is the last straw. You should all be aware that a good number of jokes, character development and plot points rely on the usage of honorifics.

(for example: In Strike Witches, Yoshika calls Major Sakamoto Sakamoto-san from the very beginning. In Episode 3. Perrine yells at Yoshika "I TOLD YOU TO CALL HER MAJOR" and the seemingly timid Yoshika stands up to her, saying "SHE TOLD ME TO CALL HER SAKAMOTO-SAN, SO THAT'S HOW I'LL CALL HER." In the FUNimation dub, Yoshika calls her Major Sakamoto from the beginning, chopping out the honorific. So when this important, character building scene comes, well they have to either write completely new dialogue or cut the scene out don't they? Guess which one FUNimation did? *sigh* It doesn't matter which since both options, in my opinion, are just WRONG.

Isn't this stuff important??? I LIKE the usage of honorifics. I could make a very good argument against the contention "all Japanese words, phrases, etc. can be converted into English", well no... that isn't true at all..But this isn't even about that. There is flavor and not just literal meaning behind much Japanese dialogue
And while we may be an English-speaking audience, a majority of the stories still take place in Japan. Wendi Lee may be a nice and talented person, but she is not Konata Izumi. Aya Hirano is.

I have yet to find even ONE person that can give me a reasonable explanation on why dubs should be preferred (all I have heard so far is regurgitated blather).

I try to stay polite in my frustration, but, since I know I am going to have 90% of the site members telling me (not politely) that I' Im wrong, I am going to just come out and say what I really feel...

I have become fascinated with Japanese history and culture BECAUSE of honorifics and cultural humor and, so called 'gratuitous Japanese'. (A quick trip to Wikipedia can clue you in 99% of the time). I guess I love anime and find it so enthralling BECAUSE of those things.)

By the way, Pulla Magi Madoko Magica is made of epic win. But you guys wont know that for quite some time to come. I actually kinda feel sorry for you guys. Many of you have no idea what you're missing.

@stealth-

If you take all the remarks on here personally and feel offended by those who dont agree with you then perhaps you shouldn't be voicing any opinions because it will just upset you even more

I actually like dubs but do agree with you that some of them have been god awful-

However- I also watch plenty of subtitled anime at sites like crunchyroll and HUlu. Most of which I have enjoyed, I am currently getting a kick out of GOSICK right now and love it so much that even if it is released by sentai filmworks without an english track I will still buy it. I like it that much. And to let you know Every anime title I own I have watched both subbed and dubbed.

I myself am very picky about the anime I watch I will either watch harem or comedy manga or the mature very violent kind. Titles like Shuffle- Deathnote and hellsing come to mind.

On Crunchyroll I have watched GOSICK- The world God Only Knows- Omamari Himari- and both seasons of Nogisaka Haruka no Himitsu. I have enjoyed them all. I tend to watch more when I get the time

So just because most of us prefer dubbed to sub doesn't mean we are lazy- It is Just our preference-
