Director Guillermo del Toro has set Danny Elfman to score HELLBOY II: THE GOLDEN ARMY.

On his message board, Del Toro posted, "Danny Elfman IS going to score HELLBOY II and I feel privileged. I have worked with Marco Beltrami many times and will work with him soon enough but I believe we will have a beautiful score with Elfman, whom I admire greatly and with whom I share a dark view of the world."

Del toro also noted, "In the first HELLBOY film we had about 8 creatures (total, between CGI and animatronics/prosthetics) but in this one we have around 30 or more and the emphasis is still heavily on a 50% 50% balance with CGI as enhancemnet or as a choice but not THE choice."

HELLBOY II will arrive in theaters in August 2008.

Interesting. I'm curious if it is just me, but does Elfman's scores all kind of sound the same? His Spidey contribution was less that "amazing". I swear there must only be five guys working on scores. Personally, I'd prefer a more "horror" centric score. Elfman's are always light. I'd like to see Hellboy get as creepy as the comic.

Elfman is a great composer, but tends to stay in the same scale, just chaning the notes around. I always enjoy what he serves up and think this will be a nice addition to the movie.

The thing I enjoy about Elfman's compositions is his use of human voice. I think it gives his work a grander tone. However, I suppose there is a fine line between "distinctive" and "repetitive."

I've been a fan of his music, too, since the first Batman. He had a falling out with Sam Raimi, and that's why only his themes are used in Spider-Man 3. I'm sure the score for Hellboy 2 will be pretty good if he's doing it.

I'm not much of a connoisseur of soundtracks, but I never notice Elfman's music, consciously, at least. Which is a good thing.
