It just seems like people, whether reviewers or commentors, like taking cracks at him as if he's another has been M. Night Shymalan. (spelling?)  He has proven himself several times over whether people like MoS or not.  I have no dog in the fight but it somehow just annoys me.

As a side note and by disclaimer, I completely avoid politics and have no desire to stoke any fires.  I have no affiliation, no anything.  While there are wonderful people on both sides, class distinction is impossible to ignore in society.  Like it or not there is a chasm growing between the have's and have not's.  This movie just tells a story that resonates with people.  I don't think anyone is going to hate "Joe-successful-small-business" or Bill Gates because they saw Elysium.

Btw... as you look through all history you have NEVER seen those poor with no money oppressing those with lots of it.  It's always the opposite.  Thus, the movie premise.  Just throwing that ball out there.  Just sayin'....

Wiseguy 7/30/2013 5:52:30 AM

You're probably wrong. Many revolutions and uprisings by the poor have ended with those in power and with money dead, locked up or in exile

And the poor may not oppress the rich but they almost certainly oppress others based on other criteria, e.g. religion, ethnicity, sex and so on

"Oppress" can have a vague and wide meaning. I don't think most folk here are oppressed. Times are just hard, plain and simple. What I do see in abundance is the victim mentality that prevents some of taking ownership of their shortcomings.

Yeah, okay. Say that when we have a theological, olgiarchy. Which is redundant but that means nothing to the Right.

And you're just speaking of the US when these problems are throughout the world.

Wiseguy 7/30/2013 7:32:26 AM

A theological oligarchy? Please. I'm not sure what you mean or that it makes any sense.

And what would the opposite of oligarchy be? Democracy would be correct and that only works properly if everyone participates and even then one side is always going to lose

Do we and most countries have the power resting with a few? Yeah true but that's what elections are for. It's the personal fault of the individual if they don't exercise those rights.

And of course I only talk about the USA. We have enough problems to be trying to fix other countries.

Hmmm.... Never said anything about Judeo/Christian mythology or highly fictionalized Republicans.

BTW... Just so you all know, (and I certainly do not endorse it) Oligarchies, throughout history, whether they be military, aristocratic, mercantile, or technological often end up being the most stable longest lasting forms of government. Two of the most powerful nations on the planet have, essentially, re-established their own oligarchies after a brief flirtations with totalitarianism brought on by class-warfare.

The more things change- The more they tend to stay the same.

Muenster 7/30/2013 8:35:16 AM

Many people do believe in a Judeo/Christian/Islamic God. If that is what helps you find peace in your life and oneness with the creator, then please accept my apologies about the "mythology" remark.

Big fan of Jodie Foster- Have been since the 70's. I do not like the obvious slant of the pure evil leftist class envy shown in the previews and will not rooting for the ignorant shortsighted childish jealousy displayed by the antagonist anti-hero in the film, but I will continue to support Ms. Foster's career.

Besides, I hear that story has an ironic twist that shows that things are not all they are cracked up to be on Elysium. (Oh boy! It'd be really cool, if it turns out Elysium is actually some kind of creepy Logan's Run utopia) I strongly suspect that this movie may end up surprising me in the end. Looking forward to seeing it. Reminds me a little of one of the sub-plots in Battle Angel Alita.

Damn! Will Battle Angel Alita ever get made?

MrJawbreakingEquilibrium 7/30/2013 2:48:14 PM

Oligarchical theorcracy. Sorry. And I'm talking about a mix between corporations and "Christian" power elite.
