EMILY Comic Getting Adapted to Theaters

The trades are reporting that another comic should be hitting the big screen in the near future, though this one isn't based around an iconic superhero. Instead, it will be based on the Dark Horse comic series Emily the Strange, says the Hollywood Reporter. Hellboy and 30 Days of Night producer (and also Dark Horse president) Mike Richardson is on board to produce the adaptation. Original comic book creator Rob Reger is also producing and they're both looking for a director who "gets the character".

Richardson's company began publishing the title in 2005, with "Emily the Strange #1: Chairman of the Bored," which was followed by several other popular miniseries.

"Emily herself is very appealing little girl, there's an edge to her," Richardson said. "There is something very alluring to her image; people see it and respond to it immediately."

Plot Concept: Created by Skateboarder Reger, the comic
tells the origin of a gothic figure and her four mysterious cats. The movie will also have 13 new characters with names like Earwig, Umlaut, McFreeley and Officer Summers. The story forms the basis of an "Emily" young adult novel, which will be published next year by HarperCollins.

No studio is yet attached to distribute but Universal Pictures has a first-look deal with Dark Horse so they're the #1 contender.

I know I will probably be bashed for saying this. But does every comic book or graphic novel need to be made into a movie. Seriouisly is Archie and Jughead coming to the big screen next? The comic book movie genre is becoming over saturated.

C'mon Pkaz. That's like saying novel-to-film adaptations are becoming over saturated. Why the hate on comics? Especially when so many comic adaptations, such as this one, aren't superhero based. There are a lot of folk who have been waiting years for that form of literature to be taken seriously by the film industry.

Now then, unnecessary remakes of classic films? That’s an over saturated market!!

I agree with joey... just put spiderman 4 to 6 on hold until we forget that 1 thru 3 were ever made, and let different genre comics get adapted. I'm on board with this one.

and Pkaz, I will probably also get bashed for my Spidey comment (two sides of the same coin).

Yea, i'll do that bashing :) I'm sorry, but besides a few little things, the Spidey films were bloody excellent. I know there's a few people here who agree with me but most just seem to jump on the 'i hate the spider-man movies' bandwagon, and to be honest i haven't heard one really good argument for why; only pissin 'n' moanin.
BTW, if it wasn't for Spidey we wouldn't have gotten the awesomeness that was Iron Man and the now open door for many lesser know properties that are really good to get a chance at a big screen outing. If they are going to take the comic/graphic novel adaptations seriously and at least try to make a good film, then i say saturate away!

I will admit to have liked spiderman 1, but the others... well, that's why there are plenty movies and genres to choose from. Nevertheless, I would definately prefer Spideys sequels to any fruity romantic comedy. (But they still sucked in my book).

Peace man!
