Director Roland Emmerich (Day After Tomorrow, Independence Day) may be dipping back into the apocalyptic genre. Variety reports that Emmerich and Harald Kloser, who both developed the latest 10,000 B.C, have created a new spec in the genre called 2012, which is getting shopped around Hollywood this week. Various studio executives read the script on Tuesday and have expressed interest in arranging meetings with Emmerich & Kloser in working out the details like budget and creative aspirations.

If a deal goes through, the report says that Emmerich will have it in theaters by Summer 2009.

must of his movie are entertainement, i enjoy must of them Big budget, good special effect, good sound. Maybe Patriot was little bit below expectation. So whatever the guy is involved to I am in !

I'm going to venture to guess that with a working title "2012" and Roland Emmerich involved, this is probably some disaster pic about the Mayan prophesied end of the world in 2012... December, 21st 2012 being the end of the Mayan calendar.

Maybe with Roland Emerich at the helm, the apocalypse will be defeated by a computer virus... and maybe there will be scenes of people running and screaming "close the door! the apocalypse is coming!" and the scenes will be shown from the POV of the apocalypse approaching as the door slams on it in the nick of time.

I guess "Roland Emmerich" is the German translation for "Michael Bay."

*edit to add:
Just to show what kindred spirits they are, I just did a quick IMDB search and guess what?
Michael Bay is doing a 2012 picture too. Bwahaha!
I guess Michael Bay and Roland Emmerich doing similar projects is a sign that the apocalypse is, in fact, coming.

It's really hard to comment on this without any real info other than it is an end of the world concept and on top of that I need to go see 10,000 BC and see if these guys have lost it or not...I do agree with Exfan and find there stuff entertaining and I guess you can't ask for more than that, I guess...
There movies have never been on the top of my list of go see movies when they are out and I believe both men depend heavily on the special effects to tell a story and that is never any good...
Brendan, no doubt...

I love Roland Emmrich movies. He is a director like Michael Bay and Rob Cohen. Makes awesome eye candy movies. I can't get enough of those kind of movies. Yes, I love movies that make you think some too, but there is nothing wrong with grooving a movie that is pure entertainment for the eyes.

Not sure why all the hating on Michael Bay, i notice that happening aorund here alot. I mean his movies do have a certain formula, but is it a necessarily bad formula? I enjoy his movies, always good action and eye candy. Every movie doesnt have to be "believable" or "oscar worthy". Sometimes (most of the time) I just want to go to a movie and be entertained. I enjoy most, if not all of his movies. Same with Emmerich, although not sure if i am going to go watch 10000 BC. Just doesnt look interesting to me. Although I also enjoy his movies too. Both good popcorn movie directors, and they both do that VERY well.

Emmerich's another director who really hasn't made a film I liked in a long time. I absolutely loved Stargate and Independence Day, but Godzilla, The Patriot, and The Day After Tomorrow were all awful. Having said that, I am REALLY looking forward to 10,000 BC and I think it could be a winner.

I expect this film to be similar to Michael Bay's 2012 project as well. I think it's weird to have the film come out in 2009 though - anyone else find that funny?

Whatever the film's premise, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't want to live in Emmerich's New York City. That guy has a real passion for destroying NYC.

I've not seen 10,000BC, but I'm thinking the big city they show in the film is probably based on an island on the east coast of the North American continent, and the city will be turned to rubble by a herd of stampeding mammoths...

Just a guess.... ;)

WarCry,

10,000 BC probably takes place in an ancient land known as New Yorkistan. :-)

Good thinking!!

Day After Tomorrow was mindless entertainment trying to pass itself as a serious film. When the "cold" is treated as a mad spirit or something of the sort and everyone acts as if they can see it coming, that was just as ridiculous as you can be.
I don't find it surprising to have multiple movies tackling the same subject matter, especially since the year 2012 isn't that far off.

I think the thing that irked me most about Day After Tomorrow was that there wasn't even an attempt to explain why the disasters were happening. I would've gone along with a bad attempt, but there wasn't even that. Quaid's character said that at the current rate of change happening in the Earth's climate, there would be disastrous results within 100 years (not sure of the length of time, but it was a long way off). Then when the disasters he had warned about actually do happen, the VP asks him why they were happening now, and all he says is, "Well, we were wrong." NO S#%$&@, SHERLOCK!!!

And yes, Wiseguy, the whole concept of cold being a boogeyman out to get whoever was in its path was downright silly too. As were the CGI wolves.
