Welcome to another edition of the Countdown, where it may be raining outside but there is always sunshine located in your gaming console. This week was pretty good, release wise, as not only was there quite a few games but also a few of the upper-tier games. Of course I am glad to see that. Hopefully we get another giant rush of games just before the summer holidays are in effect, but it seems this year is a bit more beefy than those previous. Back to this week though, of course there are a few lower games in the mix as well but those may be suitable for ‘other’ people. Anyways lets get to the games.
Adventures of Darwin (PS2) - You are the leader of a primitive village. If you want to survive life in a hostile world you must evolve. In The Adventures of Darwin you will drive the evolution of your village from a small group of simple primates to a powerful intelligent colony of humans. Lead your tribe on adventures and teach them to hunt, teach them to build, and teach them the power of language. Are you the leader of the evolution or doomed to a life of monkey business? All you need to know is that it should be a decent enough of a game for kids, and those missing Sim Earth.
Hot Brain: Fire Up Your Mind (PSP) - Fire up your mind with Hot Brain, a game that engages the mind through a series of puzzles and challenges designed to raise the activity and temperature of your brain. Hot Brain presents challenging and fun mental activities that help ignite your mind in areas like logic, memory, math, language and concentration. All you need to know is that if you need a Brain Age style game for your PSP this will be the one to get... If you are bored with PQ 2.
Dungeon Maker: Hunting Ground (PSP) - An ambitious but novice dungeon maker arrives in a town, which is suffering attacks by violent monsters. He buys a vast plot of land at the outskirts of the town to create a grand dungeon to lure various monsters, which he will hunt, collecting gold and items. He hopes that his completed dungeon will attract the legendary Wandering Demon. Defeating this menacing foe would free the townspeople and win the Architect acclaim as a true dungeon maker. All you need to know is it is being handled by the same team that worked on Wild ARMs 4 and so it should be a fun experience.
DiRT (Xbox 360 - PC) - DiRT blends death defying off road action, precision control, and the tricked out intensity of street racing into one visually stunning motorsports masterpiece. Choose from a wealth of officially licensed cars and real-world locations, then go careening through gravel, dirt and mud, doing whatever it takes to bring the trophy home. All you need to know is that it seems the next generation of rally racing games is no longer exclusive to the PS3. Those wanting to try out a MotoStorm style game need not look any further.
Resident Evil 4 (Wii) - Players rejoin Leon S. Kennedy, six years after his first mission as a rookie cop in Resident Evil 2. Now as a U.S. agent, Leon is on a top-secret mission to investigate the disappearance of the President’s daughter and has made his way to a mysterious location in Europe. As he encounters unimaginable horrors he must find out what is behind the terror. All you need to know is that normally I would dismiss ports, but Resident Evil 4 was amazing on the Gamecube, so it should be even more fun on the Wii with the new controller scheme. Since I have such high hopes for the game I am willing to give it a nod for Game of the Week.
Sim City DS (DS) - True to the SimCity series players will be able to create and control their city in the palm of their hands but also much more. Maximizing the stylus and built-in microphone controls of the Nintendo DS, SimCity DS brings to the franchise like never before the feeling of personal involvement with your city - from blowing into the microphone to put out fires in the city to signing off on mayoral proclamations with your stylus. All you need to know is that if you are itching to create and destroy cities on your DS, this should be the game to do it. I am worried that it may end up a bit like Zoo Tycoon, but Maxis has generally been spot on.
Brothers In Arms: War Stories (DS) - Brothers In Arms brings all the action and strategy of the series to a handheld, utilizing the DS Touch Screen to control the squad. Fight in 16 different missions and use a wide range of weapons such as bazookas, sniper rifles, and grenades, or fight in major multiplayer battles with three of your friends in different multiplayer modes. All you need to know is that the game looks pretty good on the DS, and it may pick up on a few things that Metroid did right.
Transformers: Autobots / Transformers: Decepticons (DS) - Control the outcome in the battle for Earth with Transformers, the official game of the blockbuster film. Protect the planet as Autobots or destroy it as Decepticons as you lead the Transformers in the epic battle for control of Earth. All you need to know is that there are two versions of the game depending on how you want to play. I personally recommend unleashing your evil side by destroying buildings no matter what game you pick up.
I am fairly curious on how well the Transformers games will turn out because while it is a franchise game it is being handled by one of the top developers out there. Likewise I am also very interested with the Resident Evil game, because I wonder how well it will control. I can already see myself shaking the controller to fend off a grappling attacker. Anyways this is Captain Gordon signing off.
