It's been compared to 'Lost' and 'X-Men' with a hint of 'Lord of the Flies'. Next week Michael Grant's new YA novel 'Gone' debuts in bookstores everywhere. Mania has your exclusive first look at fourteen chapters from the novel!

'Gone' is the gripping first novel in a six-book series from HarperTeen in which everyone over the age of fourteen disappears in a flash.

Except for the young. Teens. Middle schoolers. Toddlers. But not one single adult. No teachers, no cops, no doctors, no parents. Just as suddenly, there are no phones, no internet, no television. No way to get help. And no way to figure out what’s happened.

Hunger threatens. Bullies rule. A sinister creature lurks. Animals are mutating. And the teens themselves are changing, developing new talents—unimaginable, dangerous, deadly powers—that grow stronger by the day.

It’s a terrifying new world. Sides are being chosen, a fight is shaping up. Townies against rich kids. Bullies against the weak. Powerful against powerless. And time is running out: On your birthday, you disappear just like everyone else…

"Hunger threatens"? what, a 14 year old cant make a fucking sandwich? I'm seriously hating anything "geared for teenagers" I mean i'm 38 so if i saw this book, I'd be gone in a flash... poof.

yeah, I liked it a lot more back in 1975 when it was called "the girl who owned a city." seriously, the prospect of all adults disappearing and the 14 and younger crowd fending for themselves isn't an interesting enough concept worth exploration? you have to start giving them optic blasts and freak monsters to battle? way to push through an unedited press release and bill it in with your headlining stories, mania. I think I liked you better when you were called cinescape and you were at least up front about press releases being what they were. and by compared to X-Men and Lost, do you mean "compared to X-Men or Lost, this book sucks! hell, compared to my vacuum cleaner it sucks!" And wasn't Lost modeled after Gilligan's Island, Survivor, X-Files, and Lord of the Flies? that's like saying, "my god, item A is like item B and item B's reference material!"
