The live-action film version of the popular anime/manga/game franchise 'Robotech' has a new writer, according to sources close to the project.

Comics2Film at Mania.com can exclusively reveal that award-winning novelist and UK TV writer Tom Rob Smith has taken over writing duties on the project.

'Robotech' has been in development as a film since 2007, with Tobey Maguire, Akiva Goldsman ('Jonah Hex'), Charles Roven ('The Dark Knight') and Jason Netter ('Wanted') among the producers on the project. Maguire is rumored to be starring the in the movie as well.

Smith is best known for his 2008 breakout novel "Child 44", about a series of child murders in Russia circa 1950. The book won several awards and the film rights were quickly snapped up as a vehicle for Ridley Scott to direct. His follow-up book, "The Secret Speech" was released last month.

Although he's a relative newcomer to Hollywood, our sources tell us that Smith's previous writing impressed the 'Robotech' filmmakers. "He had a very clear vision for the material that seemed to fit the collective group's vision for the property," a source close to the project said.

Previous drafts of the 'Robotech' script have been penned by Lawrence Kasdan and Alfred Gough & Miles Millar.

I'm still scared to see what kind of story treatment this gets. I mean, it's already an adaptation of another property with significant changes, but this is going from one medium to another and streamlining it to modern day Western sensibilities. I'll be happy if they manage the tech side right, but I'm just so very leary of it all...

Watching Transformers has given me hope for this film from a technical standpoint, however, it will be interesting to see what they do with the story. This was one of my favorites growing up, have the complete collection on DVD.

It'll probably be another one of those off-season releases that appears exciting but in the long-run lulls and sputters.  i.e. Jumper or the recent Streetfighter flick

I've always wanted to see a Robotech movie ever since I saw Robotech as a child.  Definitely from a technical standpoint its gonna look awesome.  But yeah...here's hoping the story is true to the cartoon.  I wonder how much they will change and keep in for western moviegoers.  Wonder if Tobe wants to play Rick Hunter's role.  Would he be the right actor for Rick?

Rick Hunter....

Now there's a name I've not heard in a long, long time.  A long time.

Lisa: You know him, then?

Well of course I know him!  He's me!  But I've not gone by the name "Rick" since, oh, before you were born.

Lisa: Then the SDF-1 DOES belong to you.

Can't remember ever owning a Super-Dimension Fortress.... most curious.

(distant howling)

We must go.  The Zentraedi are easily frightened, but they'll be back.  And in greater numbers.

Robotech is a dream movie for me.  I hope they can figure out the writing, use the music and get the Americanized characters down right, Japan's  version's suck.  I mean the creative undertaking to make 3 series into one big series was done great, lot's of mistakes I know but it's in the try.

My hope is for the three hour movie that starts with the alien ship crashing to Earth and ends with the Backstabber with his final revenge.  They should jump around at various key points.  They can focus on the love triangle with Rick and two chicks at various stages.  The fuck up folding attempt ending the ship near pluto.  They really have a lot to choose from.

i wonder if they'll be planning a trio of trilogies (Macross, Masters, & New Gen) - it'll be interesting to see what story elements get ported/altered.  i'll be one happy puppy when i can see a live-action Valkyrie (in it's various configs) and hopefully later, a Cyclone on the big screen.

"... It's really unreal..."

I hope that Maguire is not playing Rick Hunter, or anyone else in this movie, for that matter.  Maguire is way too wooden to play a dynamic character like Hunter.  Can you imagine Tobey as a brash fighter pilot?

Now what I really want to see is a Battletech movie.  Sure, you may call it a rip-off, but it's an incredibly rich world without any of the "I already hate it before I see it cause it's gonna screw up the anime" problems Robotech will undoubtedly have.
