Disney's new Denzel Washington movie, Remember the Titans
took the #1 spot at this weekend's box office with a studio-estimated $21.2-million, but the real news for genre fans was that The Exorcist
retained the #2 position for the second weekend in a row. The revised version of the 1973 Warner Bros. classic expanded its release by nearly 500 theatres, thus avoiding a precipitous decline during its sophomore outing: the film earned $7.4-million, down just 9% from the previous weekend. Meanwhile, the previous #1 film, Columbia's Urban Legends: Final Cut
fell into 4th place with $4.7-million, down 45% from its opening.
That was it for genre films in the Top Five. For the rest of the Top Ten, Universal's The Watcher
dropped from 5th to 6th place, earning $2.3-million, down 39%. DreamWorks' What Lies Beneath
retained the #8 slot with $1.7-million, a 21% drop in revenue. And Warners' Space Cowboys
fell from 9th to 10th with $1.4-million, a decline of 21%.
Below is a list of the studio estimates for the weekend's Top Ten films. Final figures will be posted tomorrow.
