A new extended clip for M.Night Shyamalan's upcoming thriller The Happening has popped up online, complete with an intro with the director. The film--- which hits theaters on Friday, June 13---stars Mark Wahlberg, Zooey Deschanel, John Leguizamo, Betty Buckley, Spencer Breslin and Ashlyn Sanchez. Director M. Night led the project, based off a screenplay that he penned.

M.Night and 20th Century Fox are looking to score a comeback for the director after his last few films have continually turned up less box office results with each passing year. His last domestic success was Signs back in 02, which tallied up 227.9 mil in domestic receipts. The Village scored less results, though still moderately well, with a 114.1 payday in 04 while his last film, Lady in the Water, only brought home 42.2 mil for WB.

Plot Summary: A couple goes on the run from an apocalyptic crisis that presents a
large-scale threat to humanity.

I'll tell ya what's NOT happening. Me going to see this movie. M Night lost my patronage about halfway through Signs... Right around the point he needlessly popped into the movie for an extended "cameo".

He`s in all of his movies. I definitely don`t see a problem with it. Seems like a silly reason to not see a movie, but whatever. This movie actually looks pretty good. I was disappointed with The Village but Sixth Sense, Signs and Unbreakable are great flicks. The Happening definitely has that M. Night sense of dread and suspense which can only be a good thing.
That is a freaky clip.

I agree, Ponyboy. Although the only reason I was disappointed with The Village is because I was expecting a different theme. From the previews, I thought The Village was going to about the real scary fairy lore from a few centuries ago (when people believed the fairies were more akin to Morlocks than Tinkerbell). And I loved Lady in the Water - it was lovely. -- I'm very excited about this one. I think the trick with an M. Night film is to go in without expectation - just enjoy where he takes you.

I don't think the cameos were too much (aka Signs) but casting himself as a main character in LadyintheWater was a bit much. It's not like Mel Gibson where he started an actor and turned to director. MNS can't act. I think after the last one was critically panned and it wasn't as successful his ego MAY have been reigned in... let's hope he gets back on course to making good films.

I’m looking forward to this. Looks creepy. I really hope M’s reined in his self-indulgent tendencies on this one. He doesn’t need to have a surprise twist in every fuckin’ film. This looks twisted enough. The man has SUCH storytelling talent when he isn’t so pleased with his own “clever” ass.

I've heard this one doesn't have the Big Twist at the end. Early buzz has been a bit mixed, but I'm definitely looking forward to seeing it. LittleNell's got it right - just enjoy the ride. I think MNS is a very talented filmmaker. I think his biggest problem is that he set the bar so high with Sixth Sense that everyone was expecting every movie to be that good. I doubt he'll ever top that, but I've thoroughly enjoyed each of his movies so far.

He is definitely very talented. And Sixth Sense definitely set the bar high. I think the problem lies with M Night trying too hard to top it more so than the general public expecting him to. At least for me.

I loved Unbreakable. Signs was a great film but lost me with the whole “water is deadly” angle. For me it was a poorly executed way to end the film by tying it into Gibson’s wife’s dying words. I agree with LittleNell that The Village should have been a lot scarier. I wasn’t so much against the “it’s modern times” twist at the end, although I did think that was handled a little clumsily, but I thought demystifying the monsters so early and having this blind girl who has NEVER left her village traipse through the woods and get back in time with the magic potion to heal her boyfriend were silly.

Don’t get me wrong though. I like M & I am looking forward to this. Still got to rent me Lady in the Water.

I'm a big Shyamalan fan and Signs is without a doubt my favorite film of his to date. I've really been looking forward to seeing this, but I haven't watched the clip yet (damn job actually makes me WORK during the day!!). I did however come across an early review of the film online, and I'm sorry to say it's not pretty at all. It's fairly spoiler free except one part that needs to be highlighted to read, but this is a bad sign, guys.

Check it out if you're interested:

I have to say that Lady in the Water is a guilty pleasure of mine. I enjoy all of his films except Unbreakable. I am still trying to get used to that film.

That being said, I am looking forward to this movie. I am interested to see if there is going to be a difference in his PG-13 films to this new R rating.

I'm a MNS fan as well, but sometimes I think he's read too much of his good press over the years. His movies are intelligent which is a nice change of pace from the majority of mainstream movies which is why I'll always go to see an MNS movie.
