Extra Scene Added to HALF BLOOD?

According to Australia's Herald-Sun newspaper via SnitchSeeker, there may be a new scene getting added to Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince that wasn't in the original Rowling novel. In an interview with the paper, producer David Barron elaborated more on the extra effort.

"But this was brought in because Jo (Rowling) was able throughout the quite lengthy book to keep dropping little snippets of what was happening in the outside world - there'd be people reading newspapers and talking about how somebody's parents had been killed, or somebody had been withdrawn from school because their parents didn't think it was safe.

And we're making aware that the Muggle world is also experiencing these disasters, but thinks they are disasters rather than the work of Voldemort.

The book is peppered with those moments, but we couldn't do that quite so easily in the film.

So (the extra scene) comes in the middle of the film and it just reminds us the world is no longer a safe place. Even in what would normally be considered the safe haven of the Burrow, nobody's safe.

I think you'll like it. It's quite effective."

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince will hit theaters Nov 21, 2008.

Okay, I was about to go all livid about how so far they have left out little yet vital parts in some of the past movies that would have added some much needed depth to story and character, yet they're going to ADD a scene? However, from the way this sounds, it's not even like they're adding a scene, just condensing a bunch of scenes down...although it would have been great to see the meeting between Fudge and the Prime Minister that is at the beginning of the book. That's where you really get the idea that nowhere is safe and that even non-magical folk are in danger.

Your take was my take too, except that last part about Fudge since I haven't read the books yet, I don't know anything about that.
I think Yates knows what he's doing and I'm sure the scene will be good. Plus doesn't JK have to ok everything anyway.

i hope this one takes its time. i hated getting umbridge in doses of amusing, way abbreviated montages. not that it was a bad movie. it was a pretty good flick.

Oh and I'm ready for a 3 to 3 and a half hour harry potter. Enough of this short movie from a long book crap.

I hope they go LOTR style with the last two movies and keep the running time close to 3 hours. I was disappointed with OFTP in terms of running time, when it is like the longest book. Order was my least favorite book (too much whing and complaining). I mean yeah, the teenage years are hard and full of angst, and i think she captured that well. We all went through that kind of stuff, although, my wand shot something other than sparks.

Agreed. While I do get why people are prone to avoid the nearly three hour movie (hell, even my arse starts to get sore after about the two and a half hour point) I'm all for a longer movie that attempts to pay justice to the source material. All the non-hackers with 90 minute attention spans should just wait for the film to come out on video.

cutting out "the other minister" (the first chapter) is a terrible idea. it's one of the best parts of the book.
