What They Say
She's Frantic! She's Frustrated! And she's Female! That's F3 for short,

But the intrepid Hiroe Ogawa is determined to rid herself of the first two. Physically perfect otherwise, Hiroe's sole complaint is her inability to reach the peak of physical pleasure. Now she's putting everything she has into a desperate bid to achieve the desired state.

She'll try everything, including hypnosis, if she has to and no helping hands will be turned away. Don't miss the wildest trilogy of sex comedies ever animated as one lone woman braves mad scientists, sex-starved lesbians and demon possessed rubber dolls in search of the ultimate fulfillment!

The Review!
SoftCel has finally hit the DVD market and their first release is one of the most requested titles by fans. This three episode piece is probably one of the best hentai shows to watch in a group or with more people than just yourself. It almost demands a MST3K track.

Audio:
For our primary viewing session, we listened to this disc in its original language of Japanese. This is also the only language really provided for all three episodes. The show is from the early 90s, so its a pretty basic stereo mix with most of it being center channel based outside of the music. Theres not much in terms of directionality, but frankly thats of little concern here.

Video:
The transfer for this show looks good for the most part, with solid colors that have a few vibrant spots and no real bleeding to it. Cross coloration is almost non existent but theres a fair amount of aliasing in a few panning sequences here and there. Its not a bad transfer by any means, but its age and general budget keep it from looking like a stellar show. It does look much better than the previous VHS versions floating about.

Packaging:
The main cover is a bit barren in terms of background, but it makes up for it in the foreground with a nice image of three of the main women from the series, all in outfits none of them actually wear in the show. I wish Hiroe wore that in the show! The F3 logo is nicely placed with the full mnage a trois alongside it. The back cover provides a few shots from the show and a good summary of what to expect as well as the basic production information. The insert provides a shot of the main menu while the reverse side has another image while listing the previews available on the disc.

Menu:
The menus are very basic here with just static animation shots in each menu. With little on the disc outside of the episodes and the previews, its quick to move through things and get to the show. The language selections default to Japanese with subtitles as well, so theres one less menu there. The great bit with the menus are the icon selectors

Extras:
The only extra included here is the English dub track for the first episode. They never got to dub the remaining episodes, so instead of just tossing it out theyve decided to put it on the disc and list it as an extra feature. The dub, quite honestly, is just as hilarious for mostly the same reasons plus some additional ones of just listening to them perform. I wish I knew who did what role.

Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
F3, or Frantic, Frustrated and Female, is one of the earlier Pink Pineapple/AIC collaborations that focused more on the comedy side of things than anything else. While just about every hentai show these days is very explicit, a show like F3 doesnt go into as much detail and plays by the laws for the most part. While theres plenty of sex to go around in these shows, its the comical aspect of the situation that makes it such a classic.

And it is indeed a classic. The three episodes play out as pure comic gold, as it follows the exploits of Hiroe, a young woman who simply cannot climax. No matter what she does or tries, she cant do it by herself or with any kind of toy. Even with the Wave Motion vibrator (which her sister points out is the latest model). During one instance where Hiroe is trying to get her body to achieve its proper state, her sister catches her and decides to help out. Hours later, Mayaka is completely undone by Hiroe hasnt had her shining moment yet.

She ends up leading Hiroe off to such varying places as a fortune teller to try and figure out whats wrong to a mad scientist who plays like a second rate Barbarella villain. What eventually does the trick is hypnosis, but with very amusing side effects to the entire situation. And thats all within just part of the first episode!

What makes things work so well in here is the absolute lack of regard for normal rules in storytelling by the creators. When we get to the second episode, Mayaka and Hiroe become housemates instead of sisters and their mother becomes a landlady/substitute mother. These changes occur throughout the episodes and relationships continually change, often with Monty Pythonesque insistence about it.

So much of the humor in these episodes is visual and hard to explain, as well as spoiling much of what makes it fun. We initially watched a checkdisc version of this during Otakon 2002 with a small group of friends and it went over extremely well in that situation. In watching it just with my wife, it still went over very well with lots of out loud laughing, even after repeated viewings. F3 is a rare hentai treat in that its not terribly explicit, over the top in humor and well animated. Theres definitely a reason its considered a classic.
