Doctor Strange Movie for Marvel

Phase 3 in Marvel's plan

Marvel announced this weekend that the Master of Mysticism will join the Marvel Movie Universe. That’s right, in what will be Phrase 3 of Marvel Studio’s plan Doctor Strange will join Ant-Man in the next crop of movies.

Marvel’s uber producer Kevin Feige had this to say about the Doctor Strange project:

"Doctor Strange, which I've been talking about for years, is definitely one of them," he confirmed. "He's a great, original character, and he checks the box off this criteria that I have: he's totally different from anything else we have, just like Guardians of the Galaxy. He's totally different from anything we've done before, as is Ant-Man, which keeps us excited."

Feige also had a few words about Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man:

"Ant-Man is definitely part of Phase Three. Like Iron Man 3, it’s certainly set in the Marvel Universe, but it’s also through the lens of Edgar Wright — which is the only reason we’re making the movie… It’s very much an Ant-Man origin movie from the perspective of Edgar Wright and his co-writer Joe Cornish. It will of course be firmly planted in the MCU, but a different corner than we’ve seen before.”

During the press junket for The Incredible Hulk, I had the opportunity to ask Feige about who we would see in a Doctor Strange film. Fiege had this to say:

I think Stephen Strange shares a quirkiness, a uniqueness with Tony Stark so I can think of a hand full of people to play Stephen Strange. What I love to do is ask you guys who you want to play role. We patrol the message boards all the time to see who the fans want in this particular role. I’ll tell you this, our movies have two casting lists. One that comes from the casting director and our own ideas but the other is from the message boards about what people are buzzing about” (read the interview here).

Who do you think should play Doctor Strange Maniacs?

Lots of people are nominating Johnny Depp, Ohde Fehr, or Jim Caviezel for the part. I say any of them could pull it off.

My first choice would be Downey Jr... but he is IronMan and I have no idea who else fits the mold for Doc Strange

Wow I find it pretty cool that they do read the forums and these sites to see what fans are thinking. Not that they need to do what fans say but to understand our sensibilities is pretty cool of Marvel. Maybe that's part of why they're succeeding

Jon Hamm for Dr Strange

I'm Depped out already. Don't want him in my Marvel Universe. Last thing I want is Jack Sparrow's feminine ways conjuring up some magic.

although I love Oded Fehr, Stephen Strange IS an American. My suggestions would be Leonardo DiCaprio, Adrian Brody, or perhaps Tim Olyphant (who would be awesome)

Btw I'm more excited for AntMan than Dr Strange. Or at least just as excited.

I wonder if they'll approach GDT for Dr Strange. At some point in the past he was attached to direct a version of him if I'm not mistaken

I wonder if Phase 3 will be original flicks and no sequels.

Wiseguy 1/28/2013 9:45:05 AM

Well we have Ant Man and Dr Strange so far. I'd like to see Namor and Black Panther at some point too but you'd think they'd want at least 1 or 2 of the established characters to help pass the torch. I'd be really surprised if they were all originals

But then again Phase 3 may be a whole new thing. The first 2 phases culminate with an Avengers film maybe they'll do something else the 3rd time around. Somebody needs to pose that question to Feige but I'd think it hasn't all been decided yet.

But then again a lot of these cats were signed for 6 picture deals so more sequels seem likely. I mean outside of the next IM none of the others have reached the mandatory trilogy.

I'm rambling, 2 cups of coffee does that to me at times. Somebody get Feige on the horn

I actually really enjoyed Disney's "Sorcerer's Apprentice", which is what Im kind of hoping Dr. Strange's magic special effects will be like. Looking forward to this very much as well. And I like all of Axia's choices. I first thought Liam Neeson would be cool too, but I think he's too stiff for the part. Dr. Strange has to be smooth, and graceful i would think.
