Nearly three weeks after Michael Shannon was confirmed as the new General Zod in Warner Bros. Pictures and Zack Snyder's Superman reboot, Man of Steel, we may be closer to casting Zod's female counterpart, Faora. Variety reports that Pandorum actress Antje Traue has been set in the role for Snyder's upcoming 2012 tale but it's not exactly clear which Faora character we shall see in the theatrical reboot.

The trade reports the following scenarios:

There are multiple Faoras in the Superman universe, so it remains unclear which one Traue has been tapped to play. The first Faora, Faora Hu-Ul, was introduced in Action Comics #471 as a beautiful Kryptonian woman with an intense unexplained hatred for all men. She was an expert at the Kryptonian martial art of Horo-Kanu, which utilizes pressure points on the Kryptonian body and made her a dangerous foe for Superman to fight in hand-to-hand combat. In fact, he was forced to flee from their first encounter.

That said, it's more likely that Traue will be playing the version of Faora that debuted in Action Comics #779 as a Pokolistanian aide of General Zod. That character was an orphan metahuman with the ability to disrupt molecular bonds, which allowed her to create a mutagenic virus that served as the linchpin of Zod's plan.

In pop culture, the female Kryptonian named Ursa in "Superman" and "Superman II" is believed to be based on Faora, who appeared on the eighth season of "Smallville" as the wife of General Zod.

So which shall we see? We'll let you Maniacs discuss your theories down below...

If Traue joins the cast, she will be joining co-stars Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Diane Lane, Kevin Costner and Michael Shannon. Zack Snyder is directing Man of Steel from a screenplay by David S. Goyer and Jonathan Nolan.  Christopher Nolan is producing alongside Charles Roven, Emma Thomas and Deborah Snyder, while Legendary topper Thomas Tull is exec producing with Lloyd Phillips.

Production is scheduled to start this summer in Chicago, with a release planned for December 2012.

I don't get it, they finally add Ursa to the comics canon as Zod's right hand and lover, and now they go back further? Is it to get away from the Donner portrayal of Zod?

SarcasticCaveman 4/28/2011 4:04:00 AM

Eh, I don't know...my take on this is "Oh crap, the fans aren't happy with Zod...let's delve deeper into the comic mythos of Superman, pull a name out of a hat, and put that name in the new movie we're doing to try to make people forget about 'Superman Returns'".

Movie's not gonna work again, poor Superman...he can defeat anybody in the comics except the box office.

They could announce Bart Simpson as the villian and I'd still be excited about a Zack Snyder Superman movie!

SmokingFrog77 4/28/2011 5:35:14 AM

I was thinking though, this story came from David Goyer who pitched it to Chris Nolan who liked it. I have to take heart from that and not assume that Zack Snyder is randomly pulling shit out of a hat here. Given Nolan's love of letting out things like casting infomation in drips and drabs, perhaps we can take heart that this is likely what we're seeing here, and that the end product will kick arse regardless of adherence to the comics cannon.

I just so want an awesome Superman movie. I loved Superman Returns, but I want something different this time that is awesome for different reasons. I have no doubt that Man of Steel will be different, I just hope it's awesome too.

I'm right there with you wish, a Snyder led Superman film can not fail even if they tried

raa2001 4/28/2011 7:01:04 AM

I still hope oneday we'll get to see Superman and Doomsday kill each other on the big screen

Tevii 4/28/2011 7:37:18 AM

Im hoping your right Wiseguy... and Im really trying to have faith in Snyder because Superman really does deserve a great movie.  But each new announcement has me less and less interested.

Out of ALL the Superman mythos it sounds like they SPECIFICALLY picked the least appealing.

I only recently saw Pandorum on cable (an OK movie, nothing special IMHO). A standout in the cast was Antje Traue. A very attractive, athletically built woman.

Any Superman movie is ok with me after that turd that was Superman Returns. Which movie is this plot from: Superman tries to stop Lex Luthor's plan of getting his own piece of land? The first Superman movie or the last?
