With the trailer out and having seen one or two others involved in X-Men: First Class taking some questions at various events, the folks at MTV News caught up with Magneto's actor, Michael Fassbender, while out doing press for his Jane Eyre film and that meant they grabbed him to talk about our favorite mutant.

Fassbender was asked about whether he was using McKellan's performance as reference for his role in it, which makes some sense since that is who the character in the film universe later becomes, but Fassbender went a different way instead by saying, "No, I used the comics as the source material."

Fassbender also revealed that in a sense he finds Erik to be just as much a student as those that Xavier gathers. "I'm not a teacher, I'm a pupil," he explained. "Charlie boy is the teacher. ... He sees the potential in this new race... and gathers us all together to fulfill our ultimate powers."

Discussing the 1960s setting of the film, Fassbender compared Charles Xavier to Martin Luther King, Jr, and Magneto to the more incendiary civil rights leader Malcolm X.

Not surprisingly, he revealed that the characters time in uniforms will be small but also noted that there are two helmets for his character in the film which explains away some of the confusion some had with the trailer. With regards to the uniforms, expect it mostly towards the end since"[...] that's sort of when we come together as a team," he responded when asked if they spend a lot of time in the yellow-striped uniforms.

I would be beyond pleased if this the whole film had a 60's Technicolor process look to it.

"It's outside the comic continuity.  It's not the 616 universe."  Keep repeating that like a mantra and it does take the sting out of the character choices and changes from all the movies in this series.

Notice you have the formost mutant leaders here:  Charles Xavier, Magneti, Moira MacTaggert, and Sebastian Shaw.  Sebastian Shaw is far worse than Magneto.  He just wants power and doesn't care who he kills to get it.

Interesting bit about Fassnemder's comparisions of  MLK & Malcome X.

Sounds good.

I've always heard the comparison to MLK and Malcolm X and the X-Men fighting for civil rights.  It's pretty obvious if you know a bit of history.

Yeah the point about MLK and Malcolm X is valid but the whole thing about Erik being a pupil and Charles being the teacher is ridiculous. Magnus and Charles were always looked on as equals, in power in their own rite, personality and ability. Magnus would never consider himself a "student" It would be below him. Xavier would never respect him as an equal if he had that perception and no one else would What makes Magneto one of the great X-Men villains and now allies is he is this opposing, powerful force, not to me trifled with. Man, they are turning him into a pussy.

And now I just found out that instead of making Banshee , a native born Irishman, he's going to just be American. WTF? Why even bother changing that?

Let's just rename the movie "FOX's Mutant Movie" because it damn sure as hell ain't the X-Men.
