With franchise helmer Justin Lin set to begin helming Fast & Furious 6 early next year, THR is reporting that the ensemble cast and director are likely setting up the shoot to include a 7th film in back-to-back style. Lead star and producer Vin Diesel has revealed to the trade that with so many character arcs needing to be resolved from the previous two films, they couldn't map it all out into one story.
"With the success of this last one," he explains, "and the inclusion of so many characters, and the broadening of scope, when we were sitting down to figure out what would fit into the real estate of number six, we didn't have enough space... We have to pay off this story. We have to service all of these character relationships, and when we started mapping all that out it just went beyond 110 pages. The studio said, 'You can't fit all that story in one damn movie!'"
When asked about the story and character mapping that goes behind producing the sequels, Diesel had this to say.
"I've always had kind of an allergic reaction to taking a reactionary approach to a sequel. My gut feeling about sequels is that they should be premeditated. You should try to write a trilogy first or at least sketch out a trilogy if you have any faith in your film. You should think about where the film is going over a series of films... This is a trilogy... When I was thinking of this 'Fast & Furious,' I thought of it as three stories. The one that you saw, this one and the final one."
Fast Five rolled into theaters on April 29 and shot up $86.1 million over its premiere weekend. Produced on a budget of just $125 million, it would go on to earn $626.1 million over the summer season.
Fast & Furious 6 will strike theaters May 24, 2013.
Thanks to Chopsaki for the submission.
Aw, Vin. You don't have to go through all that trouble. Really. I'm fine with not knowing what happened to all the characters.
What? The last two films were so deep that they can't work it out in one movie? Vin sure knows how to pimp himself.
The teaser at the end of the last one with Eva Mendes and The Rock made no sense but at the same time was super freakin awesome! I look forward to more mindless action.
The action in Fast 5 was perfect. Artfully paced. Thats what I like to see in action movies. Too many so-called "action film" diorectors are afraid to make a real action flick.
They have a medeocre plot then throw in some ole' run in the mill action and call it a action movie. I love that Lin isn't afraid to push things. Yes, the chase scene with the safe was implausible. But it was also the most original and awsome chase sequence I've watched since The Matrix Reloaded.
If they're going to keep taking things to the next level, I say keep 'em coming.
I love these movies, very entertaining and you cant go wrong with fast cars - hot chicks and utter mayhem lol
Plus the Rock and Vin Rule too.
Vin hurry up i want to see XXX 3 !
I just have to know if the Jason Statham rumors are true. He could play his character from the transporter films!
I like Vin Diesel. I enjoy his films and I loved Fast 5. It was perfect popcorn fun. Looking forward to the next one.
So I guess Vin just wasn't thinking when the first one was being developed.
We all know what these films are, I'm down for more. The last one was pretty damn fun
