By: BRIAN THOMAS
Date: Tuesday, May 23, 2006

Warner Bros. has decided to clean out their stock of DVDs of the supernatural law firm thriller DEVIL'S ADVOCATE, the Steve McQueen cop action flick BULLIT, the Man vs. Nature adventure THE PERFECT STORM, the director's cut of ALEXANDER, the historic epic TROY, the Clint Eastwood western THE OUTLAW JOSIE WALES, Mel Brooks' western comedy BLAZING SADDLES, and the Steven Seagal action thriller ABOVE THE LAW by repackaging them for Father's Day gift shopping with golf and barbecue books! On sale today.

The first Blu-ray Disc computer deck is now shipping, and the first batch of nine Sony titles was set to debut on this date as well, but they've delayed the launch until June 20 to make sure their plans are all in order. Since the reception to HD-DVD has been lukewarm thus far, and stand-alone players won't be available until June 25, Sony is probably being wise in delaying things a bit.

But WE won't delay opening the Prize Closet for a special giveaway! We have 3 copies of the vampire action videogame adaptation movie BLOODRAYNE to give away, courtesy of Visual Entertainment/Universal Music. And one of these three winners will also win a BLOODRAYNE poster personally signed by director/Cinescape favorite Uwe Bolle! I know, I can almost hear you chanting, "Uwwwwwe!" just thinking about it! To enter, send an email containing your name and address to psycho@psychotronic.info with (of course) "UWE" in the subject line.

We also have THE BUGALOOS Complete Series courtesy of Rhino. To enter, send an email containing your name and address to psycho@psychotronic.info with "BENITA BIZARRE" in the subject line.

>St. Valentine’S Day Massacre

I remember being really sick as a kid (in hospital, actually) and seeing this movie on TV.

>the reception to HD-DVD has been lukewarm thus far

HD-DVD and Blu-ray Disc... the laserdiscs of the 21th century. They should have agreed on one format.

I have said before and I will now say again. This is a meaningless format war. DVR’s and video downloading is getting cheaper and better by the minute. Blu-Ray and HD-DVD represent the last gasp of physical media and I for one have no intention of wasting any money buying anything in either of these formats when they’ll be rendered obsolete in just 3-5 years.

Besides the quality improvement is NOT that significant on the standard TV that I currently own I have no plans to upgrade to an HD model any time soon. Most likely that’s 3-5 years from, which as I said will probably be the time both those formats are getting eaten alive by video on demand.

Regardless of your accuracy of the future VOD vs DVD, you've hit the nail on the head. Most of us can't afford widescreen, anamorphic, HD TVs, so Blu-Ray and HD-DVD have no appeal for us. When those TV sets come down in price and are affordable to the general masses, our current collection of standard and ANAMORPHIC DVDs will represent an immediate video quality upgrade. And assuming a consumer upgrades their sound system at the same time, well, it's just another nail on the coffin of HD DVD.

My current DVD collection represents a significant $ investment, and I'll repeap greater benefits when I upgrade the A/V system. HD DVD players are mundo expensive (and will be for a long time to come) and offer my nothing with my current standard TV monitor (I upgraded my audio this year, but video is the issue here.) So, why would I want to pay more for an HD DVD now (not to mention again the co$t of a new player) when I won't see any additional A/V quality for another few years?
