Favreau Concerned About IRON MAN 2 Timing

It seems that actor Terrence Howard may setting the production start date of March 2009 for Iron Man 2 a little too soon. We passed along his words yesterday and today, director Jon Favreau is telling the fans at his Myspace page that he's concerned about both the production date and release date of the sequel being too soon. Marvel has it set for April 30, 2010.

It's been five weeks since the one and only phone call my reps have gotten from Marvel. I know their hands are full with the Hulk and I’m sure they will get into it shortly, as they tell me they intend to. I ran into the Marvel guys at the Hulk premiere and everyone sounded eager to get to work on IM2.

I am concerned, however, about the announced release date of April 2010. Neither Robert nor I were consulted about this and we are both concerned about how realistic the date is in light of the fact that we have no script, story or even writers hired yet. This genre of movie is best when it is done thoughtfully and with plenty of preparation. It might be better to follow the BB/DK, X/X2 three year release pattern than to scramble for a date. It is difficult because there are no Marvel 09 releases and they need product, but I also think we owe it to the fans to have a great version of IM2 and, at this point, we would have less time to make it than the first one.

Almost an entire two years. I'd think that's enough time. Aren't the most difficult parts the IronMan's design and the establishment of the character. Those are already done. Anyway, what do I know. Favreau is the expert here. Maybe Marvel needs to slow it down a bit to my chagrin.

I don't know if 2 years isn't enough time for a well put together sequel but Favreau would know better. I do believe that if they pushed the date back to 2011 or at least make it a later Summer release, like July, it would make a big difference. Post production on these projects can take awhile and you don`t want to rush it.

Not sure what to think on this. Too much time overthinks the story, too little time and it's rehash time.

hahahaha Favreu can't keep Nolan or The Dark Knight out of his mouth. Favreu is Nolan's son when it comes to superheroes.

The Dark Knight owns all!!!!!!!

Marvel's got a schedule they want to keep to lead up to the Avengers movie, and that's all well and good, but they should make sure the directors can get quality films out in that timeframe.

LOL hanso.

Now this is a bit disconcerting. Love that Marvel’s in charge of these properties and I love that they’ve got a plan in place to bring them all together for The Avengers. But if that plan consists of a timetable only then I’m a bit worried. IM was absolutely phenomenal. Hulk looks to be great. These things need to grow organically and, while now isn’t the time for lollygagging, announcing release dates without any consultation from the actual creative team stinks of dollar signs in the eyes causing mismanagement. Marvel’s been playing it really smart with these so far. They need to keep a level head and not get ahead of themselves or they’re gonna shoot themselves in the foot and this whole Marvel U on Film idea will peter out long before we get to The Avengers.

I don't get Favreu, 2 years should be enough time to get the film ready if they start real quick on it. There was a 2 year span between the first 2 Spider-Man movies and while I'm not a big fan of #2, it did get good reviews and made tons of cash so there is no reason to be that concerned about it.

I'm sure they can get a kick ass script before March 2009.

Hanso, I imagine he probably can get a good movie out but I guess it's more the fact that Marvel made this whole schedule up without consulting him at all. He obviously likes working at a much less furious pace then Raimi on Spider-man. Two years for this kind of big budget movie means he pretty much has to start right now with story ideas, hiring writers, lots and lots of pre-production, etc.

He may have had other things he wanted to do and they haven't even begun negotiating with him yet for his services. If I were him I'd ask for loads of coin if they want it that soon....and a couple of slave girls to throw rose petals in front of me.

WHat are they talking about MArvel doesn't have any product lined up? Isn't Wolverine coming out? And Magneto? ANd if they ever decide to do X men 4, I'm sure that'll get whipped together in like 6-7 weeks. At least, thats all it should take with all the interesting characters moving on or dead.
By the way, why the hell is Beak in the Wolverine movie?

But yeah, take it slow. These movies can't be rushed. I would much rather wait an extra year or two and get a solid flick than a one-year-later-cheap-thrills-look-we-referenced-this-random-character-or-showed-this-cliche-item-from-the-comic kind of movie.

Good God, there is just no pleasing you people is there. First everybody is worried that Favreu was tapped to direct this. Everybody was worried that the script would suck. everybody was worried about the special effects. And then after Favreu turns out a superhero master peice everybody is jumping on his back because he doesn't want the executives to do a rush job on the sequel. Isn't that what most of you who comment on this board are usually complaining about? Yes a movie could probably be turned out in two years, but what kind of movie. Most of you are acting like its baking cookies or something. There is currently no script, no director (yet), no writers or actors have been hired. It is not like all of these people just sat around while the movie was in post-production waiting for the go ahead to make the next movie. All of these people go to other jobs, make contracts for other movies and have lives. It can take months of planning to just get all the ducks in a row so to speak. So give Favreu a break, he has proved he knows what he is doing, he obviously cares about the source material, and seems to be interested in giving us the best Iron-Man movies possible, and that's fine with me.
