While on the set of the upcoming comedy I Love You, Man, SHH had a chance to sit down with co-star Jon Favreau, the director behind last month's smash hit Iron Man. We know from confirmed reports that Paramount and Marvel Studios are looking for an April 30, 2010 release date for Iron Man 2. We also know that brief cameo Samuel L. Jackson is looking to expand upon his post-credit appearance as Nick Fury and the S.H.I.E.L.D storyline. Same goes for Robert Downey Jr. interested in expanding a few storylines from source material such as "Demon in a Bottle" and Terrance Howard talking about the War Machine storyline possibly expanding.

Thanks to the "Ten Rings", a Captain American shield making a cameo, and subtle hints throughout the first film, Favreau has paved the way for these storylines.

Here's some of what he had to say to SHH on the set.

SHH!: "Iron Man" did really well.

Jon Favreau: Really, really good. You guys were the only ones who gave a sh*t before Comic-Con. Then since Comic-Con, everything just started to build, then people got excited by it, and then we just were at the MTV Awards a couple of days ago. Everybody online voted for the movie, we got some golden popcorn, and you could tell by the reviews and box office that everybody seems to have jumped on board and really loves the movie. That is really, really gratifying for all of us who worked so hard for so many years on the thing.

SHH!: Are you still working on DVD features?
Favreau: Yeah, we are going to do a commentary. I just got delivered a whole bunch of extras that look really, really good. We had cameras on the set all the time. They put together something for "Iron Man" that spans from the first story meetings, to designing the suit, all the way through mixing it up at Skywalker Ranch, through the premiere. There are hours and hours of great stuff that will be available eventually. We have to look over all of that stuff so there is still a lot of work to be done. Then there is trying to figure out where the hell we are now and what we are doing.

SHH!: Would you launch into another two year movie after this?
Favreau: Yeah, I would do it. Hopefully we'll figure out how to get "Iron Man 2" going and I'll be involved with that. You have got to out-do what you did before. So, if the last one took two years, we would need at least that to do what we are talking about, or at least thinking about. Nobody knew about "Iron Man," and that was a disadvantage in some ways, but nobody expected anything. I think people were pleased based on the fact that they had no preconceptions about the project. Now, we have a movie that people seem to like and you can't give them less. You have to give them more. There are challenges that come with that as well as the benefit of people already understanding who he is and the character. We told the origin story so where do you go from here? There are plenty of story lines to explore from the 40 years of history from that character.

I get to post first? No way. Anyway, I have total faith in this guy. I'm convinced he really loves the source material and respects ol' Shell-Head too much to screw it up. However, by wanting to outdo the first I hope he doesn't feel compelled to cram all kinds of villains and effects shots at the expense of a good story (Spider-man 3?).

Favreu did a great job with Iron Man, it's a shame he most likely won't get a chance to direct The Avengers, something it seems he wants to do, due to the fact of the time between Iron Man 2 and The Avengers. Damn shame.

I wonder what they come up with for Iron Man 2 but I think what we can all take after reading this article is that there isn't a soul that isn't waiting for "The Dark Knight".

Lakers at Boston, ready to steal game 1. Finals today!!!!!!!

The Mandarin makes all the sense in the world for the next film unless they want to use him for the Avengers flick. Either way they have a bunch of options. He made reference to Hancock and I agree since they're doing the alcohol theme it would appear to the non-comic fan like they stole the idea even though the opposite is what happened here.

Read about 6 reviews of the Hulk so far and all have been overwhelmingly positive. ***Positive spoiler*** Starks' cameo consists of him saying that a team is being put together, hinting that it may be the answer to the Hulk problem. Lou said in a Q&A that he sets up the Leader as the next baddie should the movie perform well plus several easter eggs in the film.

Get ova Spider-man already. Jeebus. It's obvious Raimi was pressured into a lot of stuff with Spidey 3 by Sony and other ppls grubby little hands (too many cooks), something which Favreau didn't have to deal with as Marvel was the sole developer of IM, meaning they can develop the film life of their charcters in the way they see fit. Which so far is the best thing that could have happened for this the rest of their catalogue.
So IM2 is going to be bigger and better than the 1st, coz who knows the characters and their stories better than the people who created and own them.

Definitely stoked about IM2. He's always been one of my favorite Marvel heroes, so it was awesome to see him brought to life in a big way by Downey and Favreu.

Marvel really has an opportunity to do something right here that the fan community has been screaming for... Get some character continuity across different movies and different franchises. Avengers, Hulk, and Iron Man should only be the start. Marvel rediscovered that the key to profitability is making good movies true to the source material like Iron Man and (hopefully) The Hulk, and not terrible movies like FF and Daredevil. Hopefully they continue that trend and give us what we want down the line.

Here's to hoping this doesn't get worse like Spidey. It will be hard to beat Iron Man, but let's just hope it doesn't get cheesy like the spidey movies. At least X-men 2 rocked.

And then X-men 3 blew gigantic donkey testicles.

Still, Spidey 3 and X-men 3 were made at a time that Marvel seemingly had lost interest in making good movies and were simply trying to sell a lot of popcorn. They've changed direction, so hopefully that won't happen again.

Wait... "a Captain American shield making a cameo"? When the hell did this happen?

sportwarrior • Jun 06, 2008, 12:44am •
Cap's shield makes a brief appearance in one of the scenes where Stark is getting his suit removed.

You can see it below his right arm.

I really do have faith in Marvel and Favreau`s vision for an Iron Man sequel. Sport hit the nail on the head when he said that Marvel has a great opportunity now. They didn't have this before because they just didn't have the power to what they wanted with their own characters after selling them away. Its a shame that they didn't realize this earlier or we would have had a better X-men , FF franchise and Daredevil movie.
