Favreau Talks More IRON MAN

MTV recently caught up with Jon Favreau, the director of the upcoming film IRON MAN. Below are the quotes I found most relevant, you can view the full interview on MTV's website here.

"It's the first movie Marvel is self-financing," he said of a new deal that frees the makers of the "Spider-Man" and "X-Men" movies from studio control. "We're set to come out in the summer of '08, and we'll start shooting in January."

"We're gonna have it take place in the present day, but there will be an origin story that has the old, gray Iron Man suit; eventually it will progress into more of the modern look," Favreau said. "That's the fun of doing the first one."

"The alcoholism doesn't come into play until later on in the story of Iron Man," he said. "[The comic] started off in the '60s, where it was about him as a successful manufacturer who developed this suit. Then, later, it spins off into that story about him fighting against himself. I think we're going to lay the groundwork for it, but the first one's going to explore him taking on this alter ego of Iron Man, and developing the suit, and what happens politically within the Stark Corporation."

Regarding casting:

"What's nice is that those movies don't require an expensive star; Iron Man's the star, the superhero is the star," the director insisted. "The success of 'X-Men' and 'Spider-Man' without being star-driven pieces reassures [executives] that the film does have an upside commercially."

If their claiming that X-Men and Spider-Man were not "star-driven", maybe they should cast unknowns or lesser-knowns for the rolls.

I think what he means is, that if Spiderman would have been played by an total unknown, it still would have done well. No one went to see it, to actually watch Tobey Maguire. They went to see the character, Spidey. The same thing goes with the X-men. Now of course, if the acting was bad, it probably wouldn't have been as popular, yet, the actors still didn't have to be big time. The most current case in point is Supes. Brandon Routh hasn`t done a damn thing, but people are going to still see it, because they want to see Superman. I hope he doesn`t suck, for his sake. That would be one quick movie career if he does.

I think they'll go the F4 route and use tv actors, Lost's Matthew Fox springs to mind.

Anyway, I`m looking forward to see who they cast as Tony Stark.

I'm curious too. Finding someone who doesn't look goofy in a mustache is going to be tough.

Let's just pray that it isn't nut-job Tom Cruise. I heard a rumor on the radio that he was once again exoressing interest in the role, and the guy who reported this usually knows what he is talking about. I doubt he will be cast though, seeing as how he is so expensive, and how every movie studio is hesitant to even touch him.

I think they'll go for a "name" actor who doesn't require a big paycheck; someone on the level of Josh Lucas or Josh Hartnett. I like that they're starting with an origin story so we can watch the suit & the Tony Stark/Iron Man internal conflict develop. Sounds like Favreau has a pretty good handle on where he's going with the movie. What about the John Carter movie? Is he still doing that?

I like that he isn't looking for a "name" because then they'll be casting for the right guy. Remember when they were considering Hartnett for Superman? There is no way you would be able to watch that movie and think that this IS superman. You'd be like, "that's a neat costume josh hartnett is wearing." Stars are arbitrary. I don't deny that many of them give wonderful and unforgettable performances, that's not the issue, but often THEY get too much credit for simply being the beautiful face on top of a clock full of talented coggs and for some reason get all of the credit for the box office gross. I find that I like movies shot by a good cinematographer more than I do a movie that has a big star. Look at the top ten top grossing movies of all time. 5 out of 10 were made with actors who were either complete unknowns OR were made stars by that movie (as in Tobey Maguire's case..he was known, but spiderman made him huge).

Oh, and I hope that in the name of all that is holy that they don't cast Josh Lucas. For some reason, hollywood REALLY wants him to be huge, but everyone just keeps saying "oh, yeah, that guy." Stop it. I know when I'm being marketed to. The only role I think I'd be happy to see Josh Lucas play would be Green Lantern...I don't know why...but I think he would do a good job. But yeah. I just don't think it's meant to be for him. A good tony stark would be Timothy Dalton 10 years ago. Or Robert Goulet right now...j/k fanboys

The only man who ever looked darn cool in a mustache, Tom Selleck, is years too late. But they gotta put the 'stache on Stark. Jack Black looks okay in Nacho Libre. Maybe they could get him in the gym and cast him, haha. For real, maybe I'm crazy, but I kinda like Mark Ruffalo. Or maybe Peter Sarsgaard.
