Fear Itself on NBC and Fearnet

When Masters of Horror was first announced for Showtime, the possibilities were thrilling. Imagine all the greatest creators of horror film given a chunk of money to whatever they wanted without limitation or censorship. Soon after season one began, it became apparent that all was not as it had been portrayed, that there was in fact a great deal of censorship and manipulation happening by the network behind the scenes. The culmination of the censorship came when Showtime refused to air cult Japanese director Takeshi Miike’s episode of the series. Eventually after a fairly miserable season two, Masters of Horror was given the axe.

The creators of the series weren’t gibing up easily though. They moved on to ABC with a new series called Masters of Science Fiction with a similar scheme as the one they used for Masters of Horror; get some of the greatest creators of science fiction and give them a chunk of money to create installments of an anthology series. The series was good but it didn’t get much attention when it aired last summer. The creators are back again, this time on NBC with an anthology series called Fear Itself.

Fear Itself is basically a watered down version of Masters of Horror. That doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll be bad though. Twilight Zone, Outer Limits, Tales from the Darkside, and Amazing Stories all had good installments. The producers have announced a new partnership with Fearnet, a horror destination available on the web and On Demand that features horror films and special events. Fearnet will feature behind the scenes featurettes for each of the coming 13 episodes with interviews and episode analysis by the directors. The series debuts on NBC at 10pm on May 29th.

While there are some new episodes of various shows, worth a look this week including the conclusion of a two part story arc on Medium and a new episode of Ghost Whisperer the real event of the week is the return of Battlestar Galactica on Friday. If you haven’t been watching it you should be.

Monday

NEW AMSTERDAM (FOX, 8PM EST) LEGACY

When a murder victim in Chinatown reminds John of a son he lost in the early 20th century, the investigation leads to a ruthless crime family who are related to his offspring, causing John to reflect on the consequences of his immortality.

MEDIUM (NBC, 10PM EST) WICKED GAME

Conclusion. Allison's quest to solve a decade-old kidnapping and murder continues, as she begins to shed light on the haunted past of Cynthia Keener (Anjelica Huston). Elsewhere, Joe continues to pursue his new invention, with Bridgette prognosticating his good fortune. Sarah Drew guest stars.

Tuesday

SCARIEST PLACES ON EARTH (CBS, 8PM EST) CURSED ITALIAN MONASTERY

Thursday

THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE (FX, 8PM EST)

What happens when a good modern director remakes a classic film? Well in this case the results are mixed at best. Denzel Washington stars in this slick retelling of the classic film about brainwashed soldiers and a political assassination.

ELI STONE (NBC, 10PM EST) HEARTBEAT

While defending Nathan in a medical-malpractice suit, Eli is transported back in time to the day their father (Tom Cavanagh) died. Meanwhile, Taylor takes on an extraordinary divorce case involving cheating spouses, and Eli finds out the truth about Matt and his ex-fiancée.

Friday

GHOST WHISPERER (CBS, 8:00PM EST) HOME BUT NOT ALONE

Ned's girlfriend believes the spirit of her father is haunting her, so Melinda steps in to help.

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (SCIFI, 9:00PM EST) HE THAT BELIEVETH IN ME

Season 4 picks up where the third-season finale left off, with Starbuck's mysterious return unhinging the Galactica crew in the middle of a Cylon attack. Meanwhile, Anders enters the space melee and has a surprising standoff with a Cylon raider.

KING KONG (AMC, 8:00PM EST)

While Peter Jackson's telling of this story is amazing, I still have a soft spot for this 1976 film starring Jeff Bridges and Jessica Lang.

Saturday

STAR WARS EPISODE II ATTACK OF THE CLONES (AMC, 8PM EST)

It’s been a while and we’ve had time to gain some perspective, so now we can go back to these films and ask ourselves; are these films really that bad? Watch tonight and decide for yourselves...

TORCHWOOD (BBC, 9PM EST) ADRIFT

Gwen makes a shocking discovery that reveals the darker side of Torchwood while investigating the disappearance of a local teen.

Sunday

ROBOT CHICKEN (TOON, 10:30PM EST) RABITS ON A ROLLER COASTER

Halloween takes a toll on Randy; the FCC is no match for the “Battlestar Galactica” crew; Dick Tracy lives up to his name; Turbo Teen has another adventure; Matt from “M.A.S.K.” gets married.

Carl is tempted by Sirens who move into the Aqua Teen house.

I commented on this show before saying it was a mistake to do it on NBC. I still stand by my comments. I just think that watering it down is not a good idea. Some of you might disagree with me, and that's okay. But I'll wait for the show to air in May and see it for myself.

They didn't 'gibe' up? Good for them.

I was a big fan of MASTERS OF HORROR, and I love science fiction, but in my humble opinion MASTERS OF SCIENCE FICTION was a boring disappointment. Looking forward to FEAR ITSELF, but I do hope we get a decent speculative fiction / fantasy anthology show someday.

Re: The Prequels

"are these films really that bad?"

I watched 2 & 3 recently. Yeah. They are that bad, IMO. Somewhere in those three movies, there's enough content to make one potentially good flick. But basically, they're one big digital smear of overwrought effects, lackluster characterizations and ill-conceived merchandizing opportunities.

The sole bright spot, for me, was Ewan McGregor. He nailed the Obi Wan role and made me believe he was the same character as Alec Guinness. I am glad I got to see what he did, but not at all happy with the rest of the movies.

Lister, how'd you feel if they digitally replaced Sir Alec Guiness with Ewan McGregor at the tail end of Return of the Jedi? I know they replaced the actor player old Anakin with Hayden Christensen but I personally havent seen the new cut of the film (even though I own it on DVD)

I would be as disappointed as I was in seeing the awful, awful Hayden showing up! Which doesn't really make sense as Darth was much older when he died and would have been about the same age as Sebastian, and far older than Haydeedoo.

Whatever. I don't consider those retrovirus Special Editions to be canon anyway. But it's Georgie-Boy's "art" so I have no say in the matter.

oh ok.
they are all plenty bad but Phantom Menace is the worst of the trilogy IMO due to all of Jake Lloyd's and Jar Jar's scenes that bogged down that flick, and then Attack of the Clones because of Hayden Haydeedoo's love scenes with Natalie Portman then Revenge of the Sith was the "best" of the trilogy. (IMO)
but Revenge still get the all time best line of "Worlds Worst dialog...ever" with:

"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

So, two great shows are making their way back to TV this week. BSG being the best in my opinion, but Doctor Who is also starting up on this week. I was never really into Doctor Who until I started watching reruns of the Eccelston`s Who. Then after watching David Tennat`s Who I was hooked. Good to see him back.

Brilliant having BSG back again, can't wait to see the new season of Dr. Who and the Sarah Jane Adventures. Been loving Torchwood and looking forward to more Moffat written Who. Fear itself sounds promising. probably will be watered down compared to Masters of Horror but i love a good anthology series and we don't get enough of that type.

Can't wait to see where they go with the Starbuck storyline. Espcially after watching Razor.

The "Your softer than sand" sequence in Attack of the Clones is perhaps the worst sequence of dialogue in American cinema, and I'm including plan 9 from Outer Space.

I keep trying to imagine an MST3K response to that scene, but all I get is Crow and Tom staring at the screen with their robot mouths hanging open in disbeliefe as the human runs out the airlock finally broken by that too cheesey moment.

Sith is alittle better than the other two the scene with Dooku(who comes up with these names?) was pretty cool, but i never really bought Anakin's conversion. Ewan McGregor's ObiWan was solid and Yoda was still cool, and Samuel L Jackson's charactern had some good moments and the Emperor got some nice moments. But it never quite got over the silliness established in Phantom Menace.

BTw Naboo, Dooku, JarJag, GunGuns. Is it me or does every new name in the prequel trilogy sound like words new parents make up to talk to their babies? which is perhaps an indication of what Lucas thinks of his audience. Even Jago Fett makes me think of that stick game, and kind has kiddie feel.
