Feige says DR. STRANGE movie is a priority

Marvel chief would be surprised if Sorcerer Supreme isn't in the next wave

By Rob M. Worley October 23, 2008

Marvel Chief Kevin Feige told MTV Splash Page that he aims to get a big screen version of 'Doctor Strange' off the ground in the post-'Avengers' slate of Marvel movies.

"I'd say in the next year, year and a half, as we start putting together our film slate for 2012 and 2013, I would not be shocked if we saw Dr. Strange on those lists," Feige said. "I love the idea of taping into the magical realm of the Marvel Universe, which is fairly significant and hasn't yet seen life on screen. It's something I'm very, very interested in."

Although a favorite of many, Dr. Strange has had a tough time sustaining a regular comic series of late. Creators of no less significance than J. Michael Straczinski and Brian K. Vaughn have tried their hand at repositioning the Sorcerer Supreme for comics greatness and, on some level, failed. Recently Neil Gaiman has expressed interest in penning the script for a film version of the character, and 'Hobbit' director Guillermo del Toro has expressed interest in directingt a Gaiman-written film.

What do you think? Should there be a Dr. Strange movie? Who should play the good doctor on the big screen? Post your comments below...

Absolutely. The realm of magic in the Marvel Universe is rich. If taken seriously, it could be done very well.

Johnny Depp in Ninth Gate = Dr. Strange so they need to cast that dude although he might be kinda old. Guillermo Del Toro had an imdb entry for Strange but you know that he be busy till forever. Marvel needs to get in touch with my boy Alfonso Cuaron, I'm getting tired of no one giving that cat a superhero film but that bum Goyer pretty soon gonna have 2 under his belt.

Cuaron Depp = DR. STRANGE. You know it son, don't lie to yourself like that.
I tell you, I loved the character of Dr. Strange in the comics. I never thought he got his props. I would love love loooove to see a cool, kick ass live action movie version of the good doctor, but I doubt seriously it will happen. This is probably the toughest property to bring to live action and be taken seriously. Cap is tough, Thor is tough, but Strange? Eeee. As much as I would love to see it done, I don't know how they would keep true to the character and not turn into a cheese fest on screen. Seriously, just try saying the phrases, "Eye of Agamotto," "Dormammu," and "Crimson Rings of Cyttorak" out loud and you'll see what I'm talking about. I'm still pulling for it and hoping it will be great, but I'm keeping my expectations very low...

Johnny Depp must get burning ears from all the things people keep suggesting him for. He would be the top choice for Dr. Strange but with the Pirate movies, Alice in Wonderland, and Dark Shadows his plate is getting full.

Might I suggest Adrien Brody? He was also my original choice for the Joker and also my pick for the Riddler in a Dark Knight sequel.

I don't really know why he came to mind due to his roles either being pretty brainless parts or not a main character but maybe his upcoming role in Star Trek could prove he has some acting chops. I was thinking maybe Karl Urban.

I do like hanso's idea of Johnny Depp but with the age thing, not too familiar with the character but I don't know if age would be a big deal, and along with monkeyfoot's statement about his slate of movies coming up that probably would be difficult. An Alfonso Cuaron comic book movie would be insane! I would really love to see a marvel film done in the magical realm. Aren't they already going to possibly face that situation a little with Mandarin & The Ten Rings in upcoming Iron Man films? Even throwing in Mysterio into one of the marvel films.

Never really got into DR Strange until I read some old Dtko stuff. And I really don't think Marvel could pull it off. But I am intrigued at the mention of Johnny Depp. I think he could make a bad movie better. Adrian Brody??! How about Ed Qinn (Nathan Stark) from Eureka. Save a little money on talent and put more in special effects.

I think it could work... I mean how ridiculous does everything sound in the Harry Potter universe and yet it isn't cheesey. Eye of Agamotto sounds a little more serious than a Muggle and Hogwarts. Do it Marvel- snag that Potter fanbase since that series is about over(really stick it to WB haha)

I could see Depp as Strange, but I could have seen RDJ, though I'm happy with what he did.

Strange is good, but I'm not excited yet.

I can see Rufus Sewell from 11th Hour as the master of the Mystic Arts. He is a great actor, versitile and with his hair slicked back and temples greyed...BINGO!

Ed Norton(so what if hes been banner),Jude Law,Ryan Reynolds,Gerard Butler,Orlando Bloom James Franco,Viggo Mortensen,Jake Gyllenhal, (and my Choice) James Marsters,HELL I could see Kevin Spacey, think people (some of you are). I like Jonny Depp to but he cant do everything, dont just go along with what everyone else says, and there are more people than that out there too! Regardlees Gaimen and Del Torro is an inspired choice!
