Firefly Star and Producer Reuniting To Drive

Nathan Fillion was the hottest thing in the genre world during the short lived Firefly TV series.  After the series ended and the tie in film Serenity was in the can Fillion went on to do another fantastic genre film called Slither.  Things were looking up, but then, for some reason he signed on to do White Noise 2.  WTF?  So, just when we thought we saw the last of Fillion, other than Bruce Campbell rejected direct to video trash along comes one time writer and executive producer of Firefly Tim Minear with a new TV series.

Minear is the creator and executive producer of Drive, a series that has been picked up by FOX and is expected to debut in spring of 2007.  The series focuses on Fillion’s character that is forced to participate in an illegal cross country road race to save his abducted wife.  The pilot was shot with Ivan Sergei playing the lead role.  Minear wanted Fillion all along but at the time of shooting Fillion was deep into the production of his new classic White Noise 2.  So when the series was picked up and Fillion had become available the lead role was recast.

While it isn’t the return to genre that we had hoped for this series should feature some great action, and if Fillion is given any leeway at all, some quirky character moments.

Um, and this is the project that is going to save his career? Ooooookay. I thought Slither was awsome, btw. Firefly I could do without.

Like many, I resisted Firefly at first. Then I eventually gave myself over to it and am so happy I did. I have hopes for this project... not high ones, but hopes...

Any work for Nathan Fillion is a good thing. I was glad to see him in Lost several weeks back. I think he has a lot of talent, great presence, and fantastic delivery. I just want to see him succeed. It's a shame, however, because I also like Ivan Sergei. I was a fan of the John Woo series he starred in with Nicholas Lea called Once a Thief. He and Fillion are rather similar with the excellent delivery of thier wit and sarcasm so I can see why Minear went with Sergei when Fillion was not available.

famous last words: "Drive, a series that has been picked up by FOX and is...." didnt Minear and Fillion learn a PAINFUL lession by dealing with the FOX staff once already? Gheesh... you would have though they would have went with TNT, Spike TV or the Hallmark channel over FOX... I smell Cancellation before the first season wraps. as for White Noise 2, once again let me point out that Fillion is an ACTOR... he takes roles... he ACTS... you know he puts food on the table. If he had nothing going on at the time, it would have been extremely stupid for him to pass on White Noise 2 so cut the guy a break ok?

Damn, poor Ivan Sergei. But hooray! for Nathan Fillion! It's about time someone recognized his talent. Here's hoping he gets more roles. And please, don't compare him to Bruce Campbell. Geeze.

Bruce Campbell is a B movie god! Fillion would be so lucky.

Nathan kinda reminds me of Kyle MacLachlan from Twin Peaks (also Dune)

Much as I'd rather see Fillion returning as Mal Reynolds or playing, say, Indiana Jones, I'm happy to see him getting the work. As for Tim Minear... oh, Tim. When drive is cancelled, it'll be his 4th series cancelled by Fox since 2002.

Tim Minear has a seven figure development deal is with FOX -- that's why his shows end up there. He entered into the agreement when Whedon's Angel was still on the air. Similarly, Fillion signed a talent holding deal with FOX, back in October, which called for FOX to either develop a comedy or drama for him. or to cast him in an existing project.
