First Impressions: STAR WARS ROGUE LEADER

The undisputed GameCube king of the hill has finally arrived. We got our copy of LucasArts' STAR WARS ROGUE LEADER: ROGUE SQUADRON II this past weekend, and after being chained to the GameCube for the weekend (willingly) I've finally returned to give a report.

What's a Star Wars game without the Battle of Hoth? Of course the infamous Hoth mission has made it into the game, and it looks better than ever. You command your wingmates, as well as the ground troops in order to effect a defense against the advancing Imperial walkers.

We all love the Battle of Hoth, but ROGUE LEADER offers some cool new missions too. One involves flying through an asteroid field into a secret Imperial installation in the Maw. A massive black hole dominates the background. You fly through an asteroid field, knock down the shields guarding the portal through the minefield, and eventually bomb the installation and free Rebels captured on Hoth.

One other between movie mission involves setting up a supply line to Hoth. Of course, the rendezvous has been devasted by Imperial TIEs. Eventually you get to fly through an incredible nebula. To complicate matters, TIE Interceptors are impossible to see in the thick gas, so the computer comes in handy for tracking the squints.

One mission that we saw at E3 plays even better. You and a group of fighters must meet up with the Corellian Corvette Razor. The Redemtion tags along and of course you pop out of hyperspace only to see a Star Destroyer capturing the Razor. Of course, the best ship to attack TIE fighters and an Imp-Star is the slothful B-Wing (sarcasm intended). The incredible amount of lasers and fighters makes this mission a sight to behold.

ROGUE LEADER is bound to impress you. With the incredible missions and awesome features such has Director Commentary during the missions and unlockable ships, you'll find plenty of replay value. This is the best GC game so far.
