CRANK Boys Headed For GHOST RIDER 2?

Heat Vision reports that Crank and Gamer co-directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor are in early negotiations to take the helm of Ghost Rider 2.

Nicolas Cage is also expected to return to play the title role in the sequel to the 2007 movie.

The film would be based on a script by David Goyer, a version of which was written prior to the one used for the 2007 film. Although Heat Vision says story details are under wraps, Cage has said he wants to take the character to Europe and deal with classic, old world theology and demons. We've also heard that plans call for a darker, edgier version of the character.

Neveldine and Taylor may do additional work on the script.

The original film was a critical dud and got a lukewarm response from comic fans, but banked $230 million for Columbia Pictures. The studio is under pressure to get the new film going so as to retain the film rights to the character, rather then let them revert to Marvel/Disney. Plans are to begin production in the fall.

Avi Arad, Ari Arad, Michael De Luca and Steven Paul are producing. Goyer and Mark Steven Johnson are exec producing.

There are some cool new photos online from the currently-filming AMC Television series The Walking Dead.

The first comes directly from AMC publicity and features a photo of actor Andrew Lincoln as officer Rick Grimes, discovering the world of the show after being in a coma for several weeks.

Robert Kirkman, creator/writer of the comic and executive producer on the series says, "Writing this book for the past seven years I've gotten very close to the character of Rick. Andrew Lincoln embodies every aspect of the character that fans know and love.  After seeing this photo I don't think that there will be a doubt in anyone's mind that he's perfect for the role."

Then, can click over to Ain't it Cool for a number of non-sanctioned photos snapped by a fan. The photos show the zombie horde on the streets of Atlanta and, in one shot, you can see director Frank Darabont at the monitors as the undead runs (er...walks) amuck!

Geoff Johns dropped some knowledge on the DC Universe Source blog yesterday. In one of the publicity images for the recently announced Young Justice animated TV show on Cartoon Network, fans were a bit puzzled by the off-model Aqualad featured in the show. Johns explains:

The YOUNG JUSTICE cartoon series is just around the corner featuring Robin, Kid Flash, Superboy, Miss Martian, Artemis and the all-new Aqualad who will be appearing very briefly in BRIGHTEST DAY #4, but really comes into his own in BRIGHTEST DAY #10 before hitting the small screen this fall.

When we first meet Aqualad in BRIGHTEST DAY he’s Jackson Hyde. An average student, with an on-and-off girlfriend, that’s pretty bored in New Mexico.

Since he was young, he’s been taught by his parents to fear water…they don’t want him near it because his true parents would be able to locate him. Not to mention certain changes happen to Jackson when he gets in the water.

Jackson has kept this secret hidden for years, lying to his girlfriend about being afraid of drowning, being unable to swim and being in the dark about the mysterious tattoos he’s had since birth. He’s done his best to avoid it. But soon something’s going to force him out into the open and dive into the water.

Obviously, this all ties into the larger Aquaman and Mera story within BRIGHTEST DAY, but Jackson’s adventures will also be seen in the YOUNG JUSTICE animated series this fall along with more DC characters than you could imagine.

I really believe in the story behind Jackson and, like Blue Beetle, I hope you give him a chance to grab your heart and imagination as he arrives on the scene in comics and cartoons.

In the same post at the DC Universe Source blog Geoff Johns talked about his recent visit to the set of Green Lantern and he's seen Sinestro!

I just returned from New Orleans, where GREEN LANTERN is deep in production set for release in June 2011. GREEN LANTERN has an unreal crew and cast. Grant Major – the Production Designer on LORD OF THE RINGS. Martin Campbell – the director of CASINO ROYALE. And Mark Strong from SHERLOCK HOLMES and KICK-ASS as Sinestro. And while I was there, there was a test on Sinestro. How he looks. How he moves. An amazing test.

Unfortunately, that test is top secret.

I can say with confidence, however, if you like Sinestro you’re going to love Mark Strong as Sinestro. Powerful, regal, intimidating. Mark clearly has done his research and embraced every aspect of what makes Sinestro one of the greatest, most complex characters within the vast, epic universe of the Green Lantern Corps. I think you’ll be as psyched as I am when you finally see him.

C2F Quick Hits

  • Comic Book Resources has an interview with Ryan Carnes, who plays the lead role in the SyFy mini-series The Phantom.
  • Danish filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn (Bronson) is apparently keen to direct Warner Bros' Wonder Woman movie. He spends a lot of time talking with Movieline about what he would do with the charcater on the big screen, but admits he hasn't heard a from DC Entertainment yet about the project.
  • USA Today has your first look at a photo of The Smurfs along with commentary from director Raja Gosnell and producer Jordan Kerner.
  • You'll find new clips from Jonah Hex over at Bloody Disgusting.
  • KryptonSite has revealed that the title for the tenth season premiere of The CW's Smallville, set to air this Fall, is "Lazarus". Could that be a reference to a major DCU Villain?

Johns Unveils BLUE BEETLE Photos

Over at the DC Universe Source Blog, Mr. Geoff Johns gave fans their first look at the live-action Blue Beetle test that he teased on twitter over the weekend.

He writes:

First up is one of my personal favorites: a live action screen test of Blue Beetle transforming and something we’re using in the hopes of bringing him to the small screen. There was so much excitement when I mentioned this on Twitter I thought I’d share a little more information...

I feel very fortunate to have been a part of Blue Beetle’s introduction way back in INFINITE CRISIS. I’ve said it before, but thanks to the BLUE BEETLE series launched by Keith Giffen and John Rogers with a great design by Cully Hamner, Jaime Reyes rocks. Great character, great story, great look. He’s already appeared in animation, had action figures and right now he’s on my computer in live-action glory. I have an early special effects test that has been floating around of what his armored scarab-suit could look like. This isn’t final. This isn’t greenlit. It’s only a test that was done. We still have a long way to go to see if we can get this off the ground and a lot of people to jump on board…but check out some stills:

Here are said stills:

Johns finishes his blog post by adding:

Pretty cool, huh? We’ll be bringing this short clip to San Diego Comic-Con and playing it in as many DCU panels as possible so everyone gets a chance to see it.

Yep! Pretty cool!

What do you think, Maniacs? Want to see a kick-ass BLUE BEETLE live-action TV show? Post your comments below...

Thanks to AntoBlueberry and CaptainSigma for the submission.

WFT!?!  A BLUE BEETLE TV SHOW?!?  Really?  I love the Ted Kord blue one -- from what little I have read of Jamie I liked but gave up on it because it's ties into the convoluted mess of the DC Universe and all 52-Crisis-Countdowns that it keeps going through.

My one wish for this show is to NOT ignore the history of the Blue Beetle.  How cool would it be to have Ted Kord as Jamie's mentor!?!

I'm so excited for THE WALKING DEAD.  I've seen enough of these fun production photos that I am satisfied that things will look pretty dead (pun intended) on.  It's time for me to stop reading and looking at these images so I can be plesently suprised this fall!

Calibur454 6/16/2010 6:47:02 AM

okay first lsets get rid of the bad

Smurfs-Jonah hex- phantom- BLAAAAAHHHHHHH!

Young Justice - sounds promising but I'll wait for a trailer same with green lantern and Blue beetle

Ghost rider 2- the first was decent for an origin story and a 2nd with a more darker edge sounds appealing- lets just hope it is done better than the punisher was

Walking dead- Damn is it October yet? No!!!  How Bout now? I cant freaking wait for this.

SONYMANswallows 6/16/2010 7:54:58 AM

THE GHOST RIDER was awesome for CGI use but the acting was horrible.

If they are using the Chost Rider helps the vatican story hopefully the pope is a demon like in real life. The crank guys seem to do good work. But Goyer of late versus Goyer of 10 years ago is a problem so hopefully it will be rewritten script  and get rid of any love story.

If Blue Beetle goes this route they better not rape Ted Kord like they did Dr. Fate in Smallville.

lusiphur 6/16/2010 8:08:29 AM

Ghost Rider?  Awesome CGI?  Were we watching the same movie?  I thought the CGI was horrible considering the time it was made.  It came off as more of a Sci-Fi Original movie than a major motion picture.  And don't get me started on how badly mis-cast Nicolas Cage was.  Damn ... now the nightmares I had after seeing that are going to come back.

Blue Beetle looks interesting.  Want to see more.

Wiseguy 6/16/2010 8:08:55 AM

I like how the Blue Beetle looks. I do hope they go ahead greenlight this. And I too would rather have Ted Kord, knowing they'd never go with Garret and make it a period piece.

I'd love a new Ghost Rider, preferably without Nic Cage though. And a darker edgier tone and maybe an R rating is really needed to do GR right. But are the guys from Crank and Gamer the right people? Not going by their track record, come on Crank and Gamer were horrible movies even if only slightly fun for their over the top non-sensical action

I thought bMark Strong was an excellent choice for Sinestro so not surprised to hear a positive report. I do wonder if they plan on making him 6 and a half feet tall with some camera trickery or have him be like a regular human in height. I hope they make him tall just to give him an even more authoritarian and commanding look

I like that directors and actors now lobby to work on comic book movies while some time back it seemed that most wanted to avoid them.

phantomx69 6/16/2010 8:46:35 AM

i want the original blue beetle with chain mail armour... not this teenage crap... enough with this all ready...

fft5305 6/16/2010 9:05:01 AM

Teen Beetle. Young Justice (which sounds a lot like Teen Titans to me). All part of the stupid trend that every show, movie, book must be about teenagers saving the day while adults sit around with their thumbs up their collective asses. Ugh...

fft5305 6/16/2010 9:08:02 AM

Ghost Rider was ok, but as much as I like Cage, I agree that he was horribly miscast as Blaze. I also hated Hated HATED the idea that Blaze accidentally pricked his finger on the contract and that was how he was bound to the deal.  WTF??!?  He sold his soul to the frickin' devil! You can't do that by accident!!

Rheul_home 6/16/2010 10:17:54 AM

Ghost Rider 2... I wont be there if Cage is. I don't want to see GR flipping off cops and posing like Elvis. That movie was f'ing insulting. They should ditch Cage and do the Dan Ketch GR. The Ketch GR was always cooler than the Blaze GR anyway. Bring in Blackout as the villain too. I'd really like to see this all fall through so the rights would revert to Marvel but I doubt Columbia would let that happen.

The Walking Dead... Check out Rick carrying all that stuff with both hands... Cant say any more about how good this looks. Cant wait till October.

Young Justice... Sounds like fun. I'm in. Ummm... who'd tattoo a baby though? Sick.

Green Lantern... Cool. I don't know if its going to be any good but I hope for the best. I just feel most DC characters would work better on TV.

Wonder Woman... I cannot conceive of a WW film being any good. There is no way that costume would work in this day and age. The whole character is kinda hokey and stupid. I just cant see it being any good.

Smurfs... Make fun of me all you want, this looks like its gonna be good. I was sold once I saw that Gargamel footage a while back.

Blue Beetle... I'm not a fan but go for it. Those stills look better than anything we've seen in all the seasons of Smallville combined

littlemikey979 6/16/2010 11:46:04 AM

phantom - i am with you, i hate all the CW inspired crap that is hitting tv and movies these days, i know its just me getting older but it seems like all the younger actors cant act. Does look better than smallville but that started out pretty good then went south. I guess the ratings will tell.
