Hey fellow Maniacs, a cool new featurette has popped up online for The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor courtesy of Universal Pictures. In the past few months, I've heard an occasional mention on how much Stephen Sommers was involved with the third film since he wasn't directing like he did for The Mummy or The Mummy Returns. Judging from the clip below, the G.I Joe director was definitely involved in the franchise and he explains that the thoughts behind moving the location to China versus going back to Egypt. The upcoming third installment of the Universal franchise stars Brendan Fraser, Jet Li, Maria Bello, John Hannah, Michelle Yeoh, Anthony Wong, Luke Ford and Isabella Leong.

In order to see this new featurette, you must have Windows Media Player. If you have it, click here.

You can check out the teaser trailer at the "Mummy" links above and below.

Plot Summary: The blockbuster global "Mummy" franchise takes a spellbinding turn as the action shifts to Asia for the next chapter in the adventure series, "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor." Brendan Fraser returns as explorer Rick O'Connell to combat the resurrected Han Emperor (Jet Li) in an epic that races from the catacombs of ancient China high into the frigid Himalayas. Rick is joined in this all-new adventure by son Alex (newcomer Luke Ford), wife Evelyn (Maria Bello) and her brother, Jonathan (John Hannah). And this time, the O'Connells must stop a mummy awoken from a 2,000-year-old curse who threatens to plunge the world into his merciless, unending service.

Doomed by a double-crossing sorceress (Michelle Yeoh) to spend eternity in suspended animation, China's ruthless Dragon Emperor and his 10,000 warriors have laid forgotten for eons, entombed in clay as a vast, silent terra cotta army. But when dashing adventurer Alex O'Connell is tricked into awakening the ruler from eternal slumber, the reckless young archaeologist must seek the help of the only people who know more than he does about taking down the undead: his parents.

As the monarch roars back to life, our heroes find his quest for world domination has only intensified over the millennia. Striding the Far East with unimaginable supernatural powers, the Emperor Mummy will rouse his legion as an unstoppable, otherworldly force...unless the O'Connells can stop him first. Now, in "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor," the trademark thrills and visually spectacular action of the "Mummy" series will be redefined for a new generation.

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor
will hit theaters Aug. 1, 2008.

God. I really just don't know about this one... do I watch it or not?

I have to admit me and my pops saw the trailer and really liked it alot. So I am there to watch it when it comes out in the theaters. It is nice that they took it in a different directing but still staying close to the mummy storyline.

I'll probably wind up seeing it. Philosophically, I'm against it (different director, different Evie), but it just looks fun. My wife and I saw the trailer when we went to see The Hulk, and she thought it looked good (probably just because she saw Jet Li), so she'll probably want to go even if I don't. I'll just go in with low expectations.

I think the movie looks like fun. I especially enjoyed Mummy Returns. The idea of this adventurous family traveling the globe getting in to trouble was alot of fun.

However, I can't see the above featurette. If I click on the link in IE it says the page can't be displayed. If I click on it in Firefox it takes me to the Minerals Management Service Home Page. Whatupwitdat?

I too think the movie looks like it will be fun. However, I am a little disappointed in Rob Cohen's attitude towards Evie's character after reading an interview by him in SciFi magazine that is out now. My husband also found his comments to be insulting. He said that Evie's character was "interchangable" and Rachel Weisz as that character was not equal to Rick's character, she was not as strong. Huh? I understand the need to make light as possible replacing a character by a different actor but he seemed to go out of his way to be demissive and it struck us as being a personal vendetta he might have towards Rachel Weisz and her refusal to make the third movie. I do like Maria Bello but the charm of the first two movies also was based on the interaction between Rachel and Branden. I just hope that it is the same in this movie.

I think it looks way too much like the others, CGI armies if half decayed skeletons fighting. Plus I don't like the recast of Evie. Don't get me wrong, I really like Maria Bello and she's a good actress but why couldn't they have just said Evie died or something. If it looks like a rental and it smells like a rental then.......

I agree with you Flint about the Evie. I think they should have just said that too.

I agree. Looks like a fun movie, but the recast of Evie was a the wrong move. For me, Weiz is what made the first two movies.
