First Look: FRIGHT NIGHT

First Look at the new Fright Night

By Rob Vaux     September 01, 2010

One of our Mania staff members sent us this telling photo of a banner from the new Fright Night remake. That’s Doctor Who’s David Tennent under the Criss Angel wig.

He plays an updated version of Peter Vincent, the has-been horror star Roddy McDowell  brought to life in the original Fright Night. Clearly, there’s been some changes in the character, though a rock-and-roll magician could make for a clever new character without losing the elements that made the first one so much fun.
Fright Night is scheduled to hit theaters October 7, 2011.

Lame, since when is Peter Vincent a reject from Underworld?

I'm pretty sure he's supposed to look ridiculous and over-the-top. Afterall, Peter Vincent is basically a phony. It wouldn't make sense if the film is set in the present to have a Vincent like Roddy's original character. Someone from the Hammer Era would've been in his fifties in the 1980s. In 02010, he'd be dead. Or in his eighties. But I'm leaning towards dead.

@myklspader

Oh, since this is 2010, not 1986, and the world has changed.

Come on guys, give it a chance.  I think it looks cool and as it was pointed out this isn't 1986.  The days of some dweeb hosting cheesey scary movies at night are over.  Which is what the Peter Vincent did in the first one.  I'll wait for the trailer to make a decision.  Remember the stupid blue eye from Avatar as a teaser yet that turned out pretty good...well, for most of us that is.

He looks like some kind of dolled-up faggy Charles Manson. How droll.

Another thing to keep in mind is that most of these remakes are not exactly aimed at fans of the original.  They are updated with new concepts not just because the old ones don't make sense in the modern world, but also in order to gear them towards an all new audience who actually like this sort of thing.

Is it just me, or does David Tennant look more like Russell Brand than Chris Angel in that banner?

jymmymackiv 9/1/2010 10:18:47 PM

He looks like Russel Brand had a baby with Jemaine Clement.

He looks like he belongs in a Whitesnake (Who?) Video. Wow...Which is more outdated...Whitesnake...or the Music Video?...I may be old, but I can still drink.

You're killin' me Muenster!

I like it. I'm looking forward to this one because of the cast.

And agree, Peter Vincent in the old Fright Night was an old Hammer film actor. And if you are trying to get late teen and early 20s audience for today, they will have no clue of these old horror movies. But they are familiar with Criss Angel.

Nothing I hate more to see on screen is teens recite dialogue written by someone 20 years older than them and referring to pop culture references these teens would have no clue of (see Kevin Williamson).
