ASTRO BOY Gets China Day, Date

Variety reports that fans in China will thrill to the CGI adventures of 'Astro Boy' on the same day as fans in the U.S.

This is somewhat unusual as China apparently reserves a blackout period for domestic releases only and the October 23rd date falls in that window. However, since Imagi International is based in both Hong Kong and Los Angeles it is allowed to fly where other foreign films cannot.

PIRATES Producers Board DEVASHARD

According to a press release,  producer Eric McLeod and exec producer David Venghaus join the ranks of filmmakers bringing the comic-based 'DevaShard', to the big screen for Vanquish Motion Pictures. McLeod and Venghaus worked together on the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' franchise as exec producer and first assistant director respectively.

Vanquish's Jay Douglas and Nav Gupta will produce alongside McLeod and are scripting with writing partner Heather Kenealy, from a treatment by 'Underworld' co-creator Kevin Grevioux, who's also serving as executive producer with Venghaus.

The story, hailing from Hong Kong's Fluid Comics, chronicles two rival young warriors, one a cursed demon, the other blessed with divinity, whose intertwined fates lead them to the eve of a grand war. The first two books of the series were unveiled at San Diego's Comic Con and will hit U.S. shops in December.

McLeod is currently producing Tony Scott's 'Unstoppable,' 'Bioshock' for Universal and exec producing 'Prince of Persia' for Jerry Bruckheimer, while Venghaus just wrapped A.D. duties on Robert Zemeckis' 'A Christmas Carol'.

WOLVERINE #1 again

'X-Men Origins: Wolverine' continues to dominate the home video market according to the Hollywood Reporter. Neilsen VideoScan ranks it the #1 seller for the second week in a row on the overall and Blu-Ray charts.

It fell to #2 on the rental charts, giving up to the 'Ghosts of Girlfriends Past'.

McTeigue Still Not Doing SUPERMAN (nor MAGNETO)

FirstShowing chatted with 'Ninja Assassin' director James McTeigue, who has been rumored to be a contender for the languishing 'Superman' franchise.

McTeigue reiterated that he's not attached to the film in any real form but admitted the rumors have some basis in reality.

"I've had some discussions, the Wachowskis to a lesser degree, but the 'Superman' franchise is in a strange kind of place at the moment," McTeigue admitted. "I think they're still trying to work out the mechanics of how that can come together."

The director goes on to talks about what he would do if he ever did land the job, although his comments are sort of nebulous.

"I'm not saying you do the ubiquitous dark Superman, I'm not saying that… I'm just saying that I think there are some things that you could excise from the Superman mythology that people would get into it, if you took the world that he was in and changed that a bit, and maybe even project that into the future a bit," McTeigue said. "I think you don't really have to play into the origin story anymore. I think there's a whole bunch of things you could do to make that film more alive and exciting again."

McTeigue also said he has no role in the planned 'X-Men Origins: Magneto'  film.

Olmos Reveals GREEN HORNET Role

Actor Edward James Olmos talked to the L.A. Times Hero Complex blog about his involvement with the 'Green Hornet'. Olmos revealed that he plays Michael Axford, who works at the Daily Sentinel, the newspaper owned by James Reid, father of the title character's alter ego Britt Reid (played by Seth Rogen).

"We’re the backbone of the paper," Olmos told Times reporter Yvonne Villarreal.  "Things go awry, and I end up having to try to sustain what’s going on in our lives. And of course the Green Hornet doesn’t make it any easier. I don’t want to give anything away."

The 'Battlestar Galactica' actor also encourages fans to keep an open mind about the film.

"I think it’s going to be very exciting. People will find that it’s different than what they expect. Seth is doing a wonderful job. There’s a lot of everything. It’s going to be action-filled, and there’s a lot of humor in the situations. It’s really a well-crafted piece of work. Hopefully people will enjoy it and we’ll have a few of these films."

Here's...THE GREEN HORNET

Speaking of 'Green Hornet', Splash News has a report from the set of the movie which includes a first look at actor Seth Rogen (or his stunt double) in his crime-fighting gear.

RHI have posted the trailer for their upcoming SyFy Channel original min-series 'The Phantom', which aims to upgrade Lee Falk's classic comic-strip character for 21st century audiences. It features a hero who refuses to wear the silly purple tights, but has no qualms about wearing a bright purple beanie.

Okay- the only thing I see of interest here is Iron man 2- I will see the movie and buy the 2 disc dvd when it comes out. the first was fantastic and the second looks to be just as good or better.

Green Hornet- I could really care less about thisone. I never got into the charachter in the comics. I'll wait for the dvd on this.

Phantom- Glad this is on tv inistead of having to pay 20 bucks including drinks and snacks in order to see it in theaters. I'll check it out but I don't have high hopes.

Mcteigue- is playing it smart avoiding franchises like this. If he does take on superman it should be a complete retteling.. A magneto movie should just not be done.

Justice league- Blockbuster here I come.

monkeyfoot 10/1/2009 7:39:45 AM

Superman and McTeigue: the best thing he said about his take was that he wouldn't want to do the origin again. Everybody who would be interested in the film already know it. Move on to a new story.

Green Hornet: still hoping for something good from this. Wait and see.

The Phantom: definitely taking a page from the movie Wanted here, which often happens. After Star Wars came out Glen Larsen's Adam's Ark TV script became Battlestar Galactica with the space battles and explosions incorporated from what was popular at the time. Hopefully, they can develop this into something good and its own originality.

IM 2 & Cheadle: Can't wait for this one.

Justice League: Looks as good as all the rest of the DC DVD movies. But why don't they use the same voice talents all the time. They just used Tim Daly-Superman, Kevin Conroy-Batman, and Clancy Brown-Luthor for the Batman/Superman film. They've all become identified with their characters with the fans, but they only use them some of the time. Whatupwitdat?

Larrythe3rd 10/1/2009 7:56:22 AM

I agree with Monkeyfoot.  Where the hell is Conroy and Daly and Brown?  They are not the same without those core voices.  I can't hear one batman for 20 years in and out of cartoons, movies, and video games and get him replaced with a Baldwin.

Phantom: Storyline looks a little better than I thought, I like that they addressed the old costume but the new one looks like a retarded Snake Eyes.

Wiseguy 10/1/2009 8:49:09 AM

IM2? What else is there to say, May 7 can't get here fast enough

I thought Phantom looked pretty damn good. Much better than I expected, I'm definitely giving it a shot.

Baldwin sounds good, I won't complain about him being Bats, at least not yet. And I love James Woods, don't know why, maybe it's his fondness for hard candy

WB is probably waiting to see how McTiegue's Ninja Assassin is received before considering for Supes

GH's expectations are so low that it'll benefit it

fft5305 10/1/2009 9:57:55 AM

Can't wait for IM2. When do we get our 1st shot of the War Machine armor?

Phantom looked cheesy. The new costume looked like the cheesy old Daredevil costume from The Trial of the Incredible Hulk, but in purple.

The few things I've seen today about Green Hornet look pretty good.  Rogen looks pretty good in costume. You wouldn't even know it was him.  I'm pretty sure it is him, though, because one of the videos I saw of him in action showed him doing several takes of a fall, and his stunt double was off to the side looking on.

PHANTOM -- Egad...I have no idea where to go with this one.  I've always liked the character and the original classic comics -- hell I even dug the Zane film on pure cheesey escape fantasy -- but this show....well it's a 50/50 with me.  I feel that it could be a slow start, a show needing to find its footing abd perhaps shoving too much into a pilot episode, but as it evolves it may grow to be enjoyable.  On the other hadn, it could just be carp, pure 100% carp.

CRISIS -- As sick to death of the word Crisis and its over-use at DC recently, this movie looks to boil it all down to an essance.  I'm not put off by the actors, after all these years Andrea Romano has a stellar record and I think James Woods and Owlman is a great idea!  Harmon's voice lends a wisdom, and level of experience to the character of Superman that seems to fit.  I've never been a huge fan of parallel worlds and alternate reality stories, but these DC animated films have been a pleasure to watch so I'm in.

GREEN HORNET -- I...just...don't...care...  :-(

IM2 -- I don't want to know....  I'm proud of myself for staying "out of the loop" for this one.  I have never been a fan of Tony Stark, so I only casually followed the development of IM.  My finacee actually wanted to see the flick more than I did.  Man was I blown away!  As such, I have vowed to keep my nose clean regarding all IM2 development, in the hopes that it yields a more enriching, suprising, fun experience.

The Green Hornet news is kind of funny and here's way: my cousin and I wre speculating the other day who Olmos was playing. I was thinking the DA guy from the TV series but my cousin guessed Axford just because it ws kind of against type and he was apparently right!

Mark Harmon's Superman isn't actually bad but Chris Noth's Luthor just doesn't feel right to me...

Cheesey1 10/1/2009 11:00:03 AM

fft305, during ComicCon, there was a leak of some footage of War Machine that Favreau showed. It's fuzzy footage, but just as they captured the IM look perfectly, they did as good a job with War Machine.

Wow - Wolverine is number one again? - no wonder why they continue making horrible movies.  People eat this crap up.  And don't say it's because nothing else came out against it.  They didn't have to buy anything.

I"m sick of people bashing or saying they don't care about Green Hornet every time something about it comes up - okay, we get it, shut the hell up about it, alright? -  I don't care that you don't care.  The thing is everyone is hating on it just for one actor that "they" dont "think" fits but we still haven't seen crap from it except a car chase scene and some explosion from afar.  Hell, the only people we've seen in costume really are the stunt doubles and those aren't half bad.  I mean - at least wait till a trailer comes out before you bash it again.  Jesus Christ.

The Phantom actually looks better - acting and production wise - than I thought.  We'll have to wait to see storywise when it shows up but it does look promising.  It looks pretty violent, too.  Surprised they even showed that much blood in the trailer.  At least it doesn't look like it'll be another Flash Gordon.  I do love the line when they say "You'll get the honor of wearing this."  And he was like, "I'm not wearing that!"  I'd have done the same thing.  But I wouldn't wear the new one either.  It does look kind of dumb.  They could have come up with something different.  To the guy who said it is reminscent of 'Wanted' I want to know how exactly?  Are you talking about him being passed down the mantle of The Phantom?  Because that's how the original story goes.  Funny - because no where in that video did I see anybody shooting bullets that defy the law of physics.

DC is starting to put out some good animated films - although New Frontier bored the tears out of me - and I hope Marvel catches up.  They've seemed to drop the ball lately.  WIth that kiddie Avengers one and the Wolverine one, which wasn't too bad but not what it could have been.  And I love Marvel over DC like I love steak over a $1 Value Burger from Burger King.

MrJawbreakingEquilibrium 10/1/2009 11:04:36 AM

Oh, yeah, how hot is the director of the new DC cartoon.  She's pretty damn hot.  The kind of chick I dig.
