Yesterday we showed you the first photo from The Smurfs.

Today Yahoo! Movies has a teaser trailer, along with is description:

The movie begins in the same era, but the Smurfs' arch-enemy Gargamel (played by Hank Azaria) invades their village and sends them running. According to director Raja Gosnell ("Scooby-Doo"), some of the Smurfs stumble into a secret part of the forest where "there's a magical portal that transports them to Central Park."

Lost in Manhattan, the Smurfs -- Papa, Clumsy, Grouchy, Brainy, Gutsy, and Smurfette -- find a couple of human friends (Harris and "Glee" star Jayma Mays) who take them in. They look for a way home, but Gargamel also crosses into our world to track them down.

And then the Smurfs funk out to Tone Loc's "Wild Thing". Hey, Smurf Happens!

The movie opens next summer. Thanks to AntoBlueberry for the submission.

I think I just threw up in my mouth. No, wait . . . yup, I did.

Didn't the Muppets already do this? Take Manhattan? Or what about that Disney movie, Enchanted? Are you sure this isn't really some cruel sick joke?

*vomits again*

Why cant Hollywood just follow the stories from the comic books or cartoons when they adapt things..... IN NEW YORK are you SERIOUS? HOW F-ing stupid.

Kinda like the stupid Heman movie in the 80's. Rather then explore the world found in the series, they put them in a setting that has NOTHING to do with them.

Stupid, stupid, stupid

Ok. I'm a big Smurfs geek. Loved them as a kid and I had a lot of the toys. My kids enjoy the cartoons today on Teletoon Retro.

I was kind of looking forward to this movie. I thought Hank Azaria was a brillant casting choice and I'm sure he will be able to channel Paul Winchell's voice.

My biggest beef is the NY setting. What's up with that? Was it because of budgetary reasons (costumes, sets) that they passed on a medieval location? Isn't it expensive to shoot movies in NY anyhow ? (unless they used Toronto)

My general fear now is that this movie will be oversaturrated with pop culture and fart jokes. I could almost see it now. Clumsy trying to figure out his Ipod, Brainy dissecting an Xbox 360 and of course the cheeriness/innocence of the Smurfs lost by the rudness of New Yorkers. Like Ryodin said, it's the same template as Enchanted.
