First Look: THOR!

By Rob M. Worley     April 30, 2010
Source: Mania

The first photo of 'Thor' hits the web. Plus: The 'Jonah Hex' trailer is now online! 'Iron Man 2' reactions and predictions. 'Incognito' gets a movie deal and more! The daily column that wishes the just-announced 'Lockjaw' movie was about its favorite Marvel character, it's your Comics2Film 10.4.30!

Our favorite working writer in comics right now is one Ed Brubaker. While he's proven highly capable at mainstream superhero fare like 'Daredevil' and 'Captain America', we like his gritty crime-novel-style work the best. Work like his latest creator-owned book 'Incognito' which he did with artist Sean Phillips and published through Marvel's Icon imprint.

Now, reports that 20th Century Fox  has picked up the movie rights to the comics and lined up Pulitzer prize-winning playwright Robert Schenkkan to pen the script.

Peter Chernin of Chernin Entertainment will produce with Circle of Confusion’s David Engel.

The comics focuses on a character in witness protection, who used to be a second tier super villain named Zack Overkill. As the 'Office Space' life in the program starts to wear thin, Zack decides to venture out in costume, and is heralded as a vigilante. This attracts unwanted attention from his former boss, The Black Death, who currently sits behind bars as a result of Zack's testimony.

The comic was well received by critics, including Mania's own Chris Smits who scored "A" grades for issues #2 and #3.

Thanks to AntoBlueberry for the submission.

IRON MAN 2 Quick Hits

  • If you're in the Detroit area Tuesday night, it's not too late to win 'Iron Man 2' passes in our contest.
  • SCI FI Wire have turned in their review of the movie, and they didn't love it. "While you'll have a good time with Iron Man 2 and even get a real jolt from chunks of it, you'll also feel a strange boredom setting in here and there."
  • Still, the movie is drawing 74% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with with 38 reviews counted
  • The film opened in several international territories on Wednesday and has already raked in $2.2 million on only 960 screens according to the Hollywood Reporter. That may seem like a lot but the average of $2,292 per-screen is a great number for Marvel and Paramount.

More C2F Quick Hits

  • Shout! Factory and Marvel Animation have announced a pact to bring Marvel's Motion Comics to the home video crowd, repackaged as the "media-rich Marvel Knights Animation series." These are lightly-animated, voice-acted stories that users can currently purchase on various digital download services, such as iTunes. Titles on the DVD release will include 'Astonishing X-Men: Gifted', 'Black Panther', 'Iron Man: Extremis' and 'Spider-Woman' with more to be announced.
  • Marvel Entertainment has won home-field advantage in the recent litigation brought by the Jack Kirby estate. THResq is reporting that the case against Marvel will be heard in the publisher-friendly courtrooms of New York City, rather than the author-favorable milieu of California.
  • The HD Room says that fans who pick up the Blu-Ray edition of 'Clash of the Titans' will get, as a bonus, the first sneak at the hotly-anticipated 'Green Lantern' movie.
  • Via Twitter, Production Weekly reports that Sony's 'Men in Black III' have opened up production offices at Kaufman Astoria Studios, with plans to begin filming in August.

Official Mike Relm IRON MAN 2 TV Spot

Video DJ Mike Relm has made a name for himself re-mixing movie trailers as techo-hip-hop jams. He did a triple-crossover mash-up for Lionsgate a few years back and produced an ad-hoc mix of the 'Iron Man 2' trailer back in March. Well, apparently Paramount liked what they saw there, because they commissioned Relm to do a new mix for use as a TV ad. Check it:

Jonah Hex-Something tells me that megan fox is going to drag this whole movie down.

wessmith1966 4/30/2010 7:20:31 AM

Jonah, does that movie look like a steaming turd or what. I think the Clairol commercial after the trailer was better. Sheesh. Bad one-liners, terrible make-up and the production value looks about one step up from the latest lame ScyFy/SciFi (whatever) movie. The only saving grace is to see Fox in a corset looking long as the volume is on mute.

Iron Man 2 can't get here fast enough. I don't care what any reviewers say, I think this movie is going to be great, and the it might just be a victim of its own success. The first one Iron Man was excellent and it kind of took the industry by storm. Marvel's first production and they hit a home run. Well, now the reviewers want a grand slam and a three-run dinger just won't do. We're all going to love this movie.

I saw the Hex trailer last night on AICN....I have to say I haven't read the comic since I was about 8 years old but what I do remember was none of what I saw in the trailer.  If I remember correctly, Indians gave him a deformed face and he became a bounty hunter.  I don't remember any magical, James Bond gadgets in it.

I'm avoiding all things IM2 until I see it now.  Haven't even clicked on the Review on Mania...still want to know why the hell it opened up overseas a week early.  What was the logic in that?

Hobbs 4/30/2010 7:22:02 AM

Cool picture of Thor btw.  Wish we could see more.

wessmith1966 4/30/2010 7:22:02 AM

I love the Thor costume! Wow! Now show me Cap!

wessmith1966 4/30/2010 7:25:06 AM

Hobbs, they opened it overseas to build anticipation in the states. The last week entertainment shows and the web have been awash in Iron Man premiere photos, video and reviews getting the good old US of A excited for the movie meaning bigger opening weekend. Records will fall and people on the fencepost will then flock to the theater. It's pretty smart marketing actually.

Hobbs 4/30/2010 7:33:33 AM

Wes, If the movie sucks though they risk killing it before it gets a chance to get its feet off the ground.  I don't think thats the smartest move.  Early bad reviews killed Wolverine last year before it came out.

wessmith1966 4/30/2010 7:41:23 AM

Hobbs...yeah, but Wolverine still did big numbers, regardless of the reviews. Remember, a lot of moviegoers aren't big fans like those of us who comment here. By and large they're sheep...where one goes they all go. Studios count on that. Plus, the IM2 I think marvel knows they have a good movie.

CaptAmerica04 4/30/2010 7:59:10 AM

I say thee YAY!!!!!!!!

jmg134 4/30/2010 8:02:08 AM

Is it me or does the Thor costume look a little....plastic-looking?  Maybe its the photo, I don't know.  Don't get me wrong, its awesome looking cuz it looks just like the current armor.  But....I hope we get some better pics soon.

Just sayin....
