The first trailer for SPEED RACER appeared on Entertainment Tonight last night and as expected, it didn't take long before it hit online. The upcoming adaptation of the 60's anime stars Emile Hirsch, Christina Ricci, Matthew Fox, Susan Sarandon, John Goodman, Kick Gurry, Paulie Litt, Roger Allam, Ji Hoon Jung, Melvil Poupaud, Richard Roundtree and Christian Oliver. The Wachowski Bros. handled the direction of the film, based on a screenplay they co-wrote together.

Plot Summary: Hurtling down the track, careening around, over and through the competition, Speed Racer (Emile Hirsch) is a natural behind the wheel. Born to race cars, Speed is aggressive, instinctive and, most of all, fearless. His only real competition is the memory of the brother he idolized—the legendary Rex Racer—whose death in a race has left behind a legacy that Speed is driven to fulfill.

Speed is loyal to the family racing business, led by his father, Pops Racer (John Goodman), the designer of Speed's thundering Mach 5. When Speed turns down a lucrative and tempting offer from Royalton Industries, he not only infuriates the company's maniacal owner (Roger Allam) but uncovers a terrible secret—some of the biggest races are being fixed by a handful of ruthless moguls who manipulate the top drivers to boost profits. If Speed won't drive for Royalton, Royalton will see to it that the Mach 5 never crosses another finish line.

The only way for Speed to save his family's business and the sport he loves is to beat Royalton at his own game. With the support of his family and his loyal girlfriend, Trixie (Christina Ricci), Speed teams with his one-time rival—the mysterious Racer X (Matthew Fox)—to win the race that had taken his brother's life: the death-defying, cross-country rally known as The Crucible.

Based on the classic series created by anime pioneer Tatsuo Yoshida, the live-action "Speed Racer" will showcase the kind of revolutionary visual effects and cutting-edge storytelling that have become the benchmarks of the Wachowski brothers' films.

SPEED RACER will hit theaters May 9, 2008.

It certainly is a faithful adaptation of the source material. I doubt this will really rub anyone the wrong way (like Transformers).
Speed Racer is an older property that has managed to remain relevant-- but doesn't have as much popularity as a Superhero or Fantasy property that warrants a big budget big-screen adaptation.
What I'm saying is, this film is sort of an unexpected bonus, one that doesn't carry a lot of fanboy scrutiny. It looks like an all ages fun popcorn movie.
I Am Legend, on the other hand...

I don't know about this one. I'm not a fan of the cartoon. And it looks too much like spy kids for me.

Hmmmm, it definately is geered towards kids, but I'm like 99% sure if my kids even watched that trailer they would be instantly struck with ADHD.

When I heard about this awhile back I thought this would be utter crap, and I should also mention I never liked the cartoon at all, but after seeing the trailer I might give this movie a chance. At the very least I will check it out at the dollar show.

You can definately tell it's a green screen movie. I can't decide if they are purposely going for cheese (related to the original cartoon) or it's unintentional. What's with the Mach6? It's been a while since I watched the cartoons.. but why do they need to always 1-up the original story? Is this a mach5 is going to be lost and they need to build a better/faster model?

I loved Speed Racer as a kid, and even now...the first big anime, the one that set the bar for all others that followed like Marine Boy (Aqua Boy), Kimba: The White Lion (ripped-off by Disney and retitled The Lion King), Space Cruiser Yamato (Star Blazers...ripped-off by George Lucas and retitled Star Wars), Gundam, Battle Of The Planets (G-Force), and Robotech (Macross), etc. This was, and is, a very special animated show...one only improved by the small 3 man, 1 woman actors'/production troop that successfully Americanized and translated the series for broadcast in Western markets. The two part episode, "The Mammoth Car", would have made the perfect piece to adapt Speed Racer into movie form, unfortunately for us, this is not the Speed Racer that The Wachowski Brothers wanted to make, or made, for that matter.

For years now, rumor has had it that at least one of The Wachowski Brothers was a heavy drug user, perhaps both...with one of them being a transgender S&M sex slave for his own practicing and bought and paid for dominatrix/girlfriend...well, if you doubted those rumors before, here is your proof.

Joel Silver promised us that this film would be innovative...but it looks like a low budget Saturday Morning snack ad aimed at kids. This is not good...not good at all. As I said in my last posting, I raved about the portrayal of Spridle and Chim-Chim, which I still hold to be true. The portrayal of these two iconic characters seems inspired, from a writing and directing standpoint. As for the rest of the film, from the bad casting, and the equally bad costuming, to the poor rendering and conceptualizing of the special effects...well, this film is a visual bust. Where is the innovation that Joel Silver proclaimed this film would show??? The special effects for Fast & The Furious looked better than this, and that was how many years ago???

The melting and eewy--gooey Candy Land special effects look...and production design of this film, makes you long for The Good Ship Lollipop. When you are asked to take a film seriously, where an out of control car careens into the top of hill, resulting in the hill exploding like a fountain of chocolate milk, spraying in slow motion...it's just a difficult accomplishment to give in to the suspension of disbelief...especially when you consider the fact that the original cartoon was more realistic than this mess??? And when Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang looks like a harder movie, you know you are in trouble.

In addition, the film mirrors the water color/acrylic painterly look of 1980's Flash Gordon...a sort of Jason Pollack goes postal tapesty of manic Tourette Syndrome fueled mental outbursts. The Play Dough landscapes of the movie version of Speed Racer...the whipped cream clouds, and the strawberry/wild cherry frosting skies are a cinematic travesty made manifest.

This film should have looked like concepts of the future born of the 1938 World's Fair, a sort of clean alternative future, meets the 1950s or even early 80s pop culture. Instead we get this cotton candy, pink bubble gum, and chocolate flavored frozen yogurt temper tantrum spawned nightmare known as the Wachowski Brothers' Speed Racer. These two twin towers of self loathing, are like two kids with paint guns overloaded with unlimited globules of multi-colored paints...who don't know when, or how, to stop firing their weapons at the camera lens--phallic symbols for what amounts to a masturbatory exercise in lack of self restraint...sort of like my review.

THIS LOOKS FREAKIN AWESOME. Total Cartoon Adaption "its about freakin time someone got it right".

Great Job with the effects the costumes the cars and characters.

The Mach 5 either gets damaged or destroyed and they go 1 up . Who cares tho it looks great the movie that is. I'll be there.

I don't want to see a Mach 6. Speed Racer is all about a boy and his car, the Mach 5. If they want to do a "car gets damaged and they go 1 up" story, start with the Mach 4 getting wrecked and Speed pulls out the Mach 5.

Anyway, I'm torn on this trailer. It does look faithful, almost to a fault. I'm still not entirely sold on Hirsch as Speed or on Racer X's outfit. Don't know... Guess I'll have to wait until we get closer and see more material.
