What Was the First Video Game System Made?

By L. Shepherd     -

Overview

The very first video game system for the home was the Magnavox Odyssey that was introduced in 1972. The game system allowed anyone to play the simple game Pong in their own home.

History

After two years of working on the project, Ralph Baer developed the Odyssey gaming system and pitched it to electronics giant Magnavox.

Time Frame

The Odyssey was available only in the United States during its initial two years. In 1974, Magnavox began making export versions of the system for overseas sales.

Sales

Americans bought 130,000 Odyssey systems between May 1972 and the end of the year. Sales were believed to have been inhibited by the false belief that customers needed a Magnavox TV to use the gaming system.

Features

The Odyssey system was a rectangular white and black box that came with two hand controllers that were attached with wires. The original system included six game cartridges.

Accessories

Gamers with this system could purchase a rifle accessory pack that would allow them to play shooting games on the Odyssey.
