It looks like we have another major casting for Zack Snyder's Man of Steel.  With production already in full swing at their Illinois set, Warner Bros. Pictures has hired Laurence Fishburne to join the fast-tracking production.

Entertainment Weekly reports the former Matrix and "CSI" star would be the latest actor to tackle the role of Perry White, the editor-in-chief of the Daily Planet.  The late Jackie Cooper played the role in Donner's original film saga while Frank Langella controlled the fictional newspaper in Bryan Singer's Superman Returns.

Fishburne joins his previously set co-stars Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Diane Lane, Kevin Costner, Michael Shannon, Antje Traue, Russell Crowe, Julia Ormond, Christopher Meloni and Harry Lennix. Zack Snyder is behind the camera, based on a screenplay by David Goyer and Jonathan Nolan. Batman helmer Christopher Nolan is executive producing.

Man of Steel flies into theaters June 14, 2013.

A poor choice, I believe.  Not for the race change, but when I think of Perry White, I still picture Jackie Cooper & Lane Smith.  I just can't picture Fishbourne being all crotchety and yelling "Great Ceaser's Ghost!".  I just don't see Fishbourne yelling at all.  When I think of him, I picture calm, cool delivery.  I could see somebody like Charles S Dutton (Roc) playing the role.

Yeah as much as I love Fishburne, his acting has been subpar lately (Example: CSI) Also I can think of a dozen other actors who would be a better fit for Perry White. I agree with Lusiphur, Jackie Cooper was hands down the best Perry White!

I think he'll make a great Perry White, and with his booming voice I can definitely see him yelling for Jimmy Olsen and having his voice echo through the office. Fishburne being black doesn't bother me at all. It didn't bother me when Kingpin was black in Daredevil so I don't see why this should be any different.

If you ever want to see how terrific an actor Fishburne is check out the movie "Always Outnumbered" and his one man show about U.S. Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall.

Black Nick Fury. Black Alicia Masters. Black Heimdall. Black Kingpin.

Oh well, it's 2011 and I guess it is now the in thing to change the skin tone of a character and to ensure other races are represented into what was once a white dominated genre (DC and Marvel comics). Does this mean he will be called Perry Black? (ok, dumb joke)

Too bad they couldn't get Michael McKean. Liked him on Smallville.

Laurence Fishburne is a great actor and can handle any role including Perry White.  My only thought is it will give certain fans a reason to gripe about race.  In all honesty, if an actor is great it shouldn't matter what their race is.  If they can make you suspend disbelief, which Fishburne has done in many roles (Ike Turner, Furious Styles, Morpheous)... i.e. you feel like it's not Fishburne but it's a new character everytime then it shouldn't matter.

Black!?! I don't care that he's black. I care that he's right-handed! It's obvious in the photo. I don't want my favorite Great Caesar's Ghost screamer picking things up with his right hand! It just messes everything up!

And though Mania has never had an article on it, it has been reported that black actress Naomie Harris of the Pirates movies and Ninja Assassin is up for the role Miss Moneypenny in the next Bond film.

I think she's right-handed too, dammit!

So now there's 2 good actors in this film, Russel Crowe and Laurence Fishburne. I really hope this pulls Superman out of the motion picture duldrums it's been in for many yrs now. For the record I think he'll be a very good Perry White. :)

 Fine by me.

They should have gotten James Franco.

He could do anything!

cerelok 8/3/2011 7:47:52 AM

 OMG! He is right handed!
