The wait to find out who succeeds William Petersen in the CBS investigative unit "CSI" could be over soon. For a while now, the top three actors possibly coming into the series have been Laurence Fishburne, John Malkovich and Kurt Russell. HR is reporting that Fishburne could be taking the lead among the other two and is in talks to lead the unit.

Fishburne is being heavily courted to play the new character, described as a doctor/scientist outsider to the CSI unit who has the same genetic profile as a serial killer but hasn't previously acted on any homicidal impulses.

Petersen will still serve behind the scenes as an executive producer and sometimes cameo in the occasional episode for the popular series.

I've never really followed CSI. However I would certainly be more inclined to watch if any of the above mentioned actors were to sign on. You really can't go wrong with any of them.

Kurt Russell paid you to say that, didn't he?

But seriously. I agree that any of the three would make a great replacement. You have dark and brooding, quirky crazy and quiet tough guy. Depends on which way the producers want to go with the character.

May be worth checking out.

"described as a doctor/scientist outsider to the CSI unit who has the same genetic profile as a serial killer but hasn't previously acted on any homicidal impulses"

Going after the Dexter crowd are we?

Sounds like it, chirop1. I could definitely see Fishburne in this role. I`m not sure about the other two though. Only because Russel never really struck me as very analytical in his performances but I guess if they wanted to go the opposite of Grissom then he would fit.

Malkovich really seems like he would be a great fit for this role. I have only watched the first season of CSI though so I won't likely be catching any episodes with the newer actors anytime soon.

Cool! I'd fallen out of watching CSI years ago but if Fishburne or Russell were there I'd be on that body like a blood splatter expert. Malkovich doesn't give me the urge to watch him, though.

Don't really watch CSI, but interesting move here. Any one of these three could easily breathe new life into a tired franchise.

Not really a "tired franchise" Isn`t it still the most watched show on CBS next to the reality shows?

I think CSI is the best cop/crime scene shows on television today, it's going to be hard to replace Bill Peterson because he made that character his own and did an awesome job with it...

If you were to ask me I would say go with Fishburne because he can come off as a highly intelligent man who knows all the stuff most of us don't care to know about, just like Peterson's character did...You know, always quoting obscure Shakespeare and Keats lines and having a wide knowledge of history, literature and art, you know, just generally being the polymath guy that he is...

Three good choices though, put my vote in for Fishburne...Then of course whoever replaces Peterson will take the character in a whole different direction...
