Sony/Columbia has begun negotiations to acquire the film rights to the hallmark character of comics and film. Should the deal close, 'Sahara' helmer Breck Eisner would be attached to direct and Neal Moritz set to produce. Eisner also will exec produce.
Variety reports that the acquisition would be for a high six-figures against seven-figure deal.
Alex Raymond's comic strip was first brought to film as movie serials, which inspired such later films as 'Star Wars'. It was also the subject of a fondly-remembered campy feature film, which sported a memorable soundtrack by Queen. Most recently, 'Flash Gordon' found its way onto the SCI FI Channel as a disappointing series.
