The battle against the Reverse-Flash is in full force when sudden revelations and a few surprises crank the fight up to an even faster pace! The Reverse-Flash wants nothing but the destruction of Barry Allen's life and those who have ever meant anything to him. The fate of The Flash family is on the line as they all come together to try to save themselves from his attack.
This is Ethan Van Sciver's best work on the series so far. With being a bit of hit and miss on previous issues, his work here is among the most dynamic that he's ever done. This is a very visually hectic issue (as should be expected with a fight between multiple speedsters) and Van Sciver handles it smoothly, with a big amount of help from colorist Brian Miller. The pages are filled with motion, effects and great colors, making each turn of the page quite a bit of fun. Geoff Johns brings his story together here, finally giving the reader some important reveals all while adding new twists as well.
With such a set-up for next issue's series finale, Johns had better deliver some extraordinary goods or risk the failure of the series as a whole. Well, maybe not failure, but this story seems as if it's headed for either the "fantastic" category or a solid, unforgiving "meh". The new points that are thrown in to this issue are great, elevating the story, but they also put a lot of pressure as to the expectations for the wrap-up.
By being the most exciting issue in the series (with one issue left to go), this book is a fantastic read. Art and script work great together and there are some surprising moments that Geoff Johns throws at the readers. This is a book for fans of superheroes and has all of the classic ingredients thrown in this time around. The stakes are high, the villain is truly villainous and the fists are flying just as much as anyone could want. It serves as a reminder of how much fun a book can be when it's not tied in to a huge crossover and it gets to concentrate on the characters at hand. Each issue has been a little up and down with me but this one is getting a B+ due to the story being solid, some legitimate twists for the Flash canon, and Van Sciver bringing some exciting panels of artwork. At $2.99 there's no reason you shouldn't read this book; you're not going to get more solid reading from anything that costs that extra dollar on the shelf this week.
I LIKED THIS SERIES SO FAR, AND I HAVE TO AGREE (sorry caps lock) that Van Sciver's art has been a little off.
It's still great solid work, but fels a little stiff for a book about speedsters.
Also is this pic of the cover a variant, mine has The reverse Flash on the cover.
