FLCL Lands at FUNimation

Six episode Gainax series returns to the market

FUNimation has its first anime license of the year announced today after two days of live action announcements and it's probably one of the best remaining license rescues out there with their acquisition of FLCL. FLCL, which previously aired pretty damn regularly on Adult Swim on Cartoon Network, was picked up by fledgling company Synch-Point many years ago and saw a few different editions released over time - slowly. The series from Gainax is six episodes long and set the stage for part of Gainax's revival earlier in the decade with a perfect blend of comedy, action and surreal visuals and designs. The last release was at the beginning of January 2007 which in itself was pretty limited. The single disc editions still command a near-MSRP price on eBay while the box sets, when they do show up, range in the $100-$200 range.

Press release:

Flower Mound, Texas (January 6, 2010) – FUNimation® Entertainment today announced that it has acquired home entertainment and digital rights to the six OVA sci-fi comedy anime series “FLCL” from Production I.G.

“FLCL” is the hugely popular OVA series from powerhouse partners Production I.G. (“The Ghosts in the Shell,” “Tsubasa”), Gainax (“Evangelion” series), and Starchild (“The Slayers” movies). It is directed by Kazuya Tsurumaki.

ABOUT FLCL

HOORAY!

Finally! Now fans won't have to search high and low for overpriced copies.

(The fact that it's being released on Blu-Ray is icing on the cake.)

I still have the original art box from the singles release (the one that came with the special edition of volume 3). It's exceedingly rare as far as I know.
