FLCL Vol. #2

The Review!
FLCL, Fooly Cooly, or Furi Kuri. I don't care what u want to call it. I call it perfection. I cannot stress how much of an influence this anime has had on my life. I cannot look at the world the same way ever since I've seen this whacky zany version of Cowboy Bebop on crack with a spice of Evangelion and Tenchi Muyo in it.

Audio: I viewed this in both its original Japanese format and in the English dubbed version. I gave this an A+ because The Japanese cast is flawless and not since Cowboy Bebop have I enjoyed an Englich Dub sooo much. The protagonist's, Naoto's, voice is soo in your face its ridiculous and Haruka's voice has a perfect nasel quality to it.
Music: keeping with the "in your face" Theme the majority of the music is performed by punk Band The Pillows and let me tell you I can't say enough good things about they're raunchy guitar and harsh vocals.

Video: Colors are crisp and Lines are intact. I'm not trying to be biased I just am ;) I would also like to give props to Synch Point for Subbing all the important japanese signs.

Packaging: Heres an Idea I wish more Production Companies would pick up on. It worked for Samari X/ Rurouni Kenshin OVA and the reversable cover works yet again here. These are the original japanese covers and it works well.

Menus: Well I wish I could be completely nice to this series but I have to say that the menus are somewhat not inspired. The main menu just appears and there are no transfers from menu to menu, but they do the job so... its all good.

Extras: Lets start with the directors commentary which is a very nice feature. It helps you understand the Japanese culture and gives u the skinny on what the heck is going on in this mad crazy OVA. Extras also include a nice image Gallery and even translations of a classroom chalk board and a zine done by kamon, Naotos father.
The best extra is the Bloopers where u get to see the English actors mess up their lines which leads to some very funny moments. I admit I laughed aloud.

Good God what were the people at Gainax thinking. Chalk full of Subliminal messages and quality lessons we get two very engaging episodes.

Episode 3: Marquis de Carabas
Ninamori's, class president, dad, mayor, gets caught up in a scandel with his secretary thanks to a little publication by someone who will remain Anonymous(I HOPE YOU CAN FIGURE IT OUT!) She ends up meeting up with Naoto they converse about the School Play inwhich Ninimori has been selected to play the lead and Naoto has been voted to play her cat. Naoto is a bit pissed so hes been skipping play practice and Ninimori isnt happy about it. When haruko runs into Naoto on her vespa he gets knocked into Ninimori and gets knocked out. In the hubub Naotos bucket hat falls off. Ninimori is shocked to see Cat ears potruding from his head. she touches them and then falls ill.
To make a long story short she spends the night at Naotos and tells him that she cheated to get the lead in the play. Now I dont want to give the ending away but lets just say its a kool little battle.

Episode 4: Full Swing
Haruko is owning Naotos team at baseball. Naoto refuses to swing at the ball. Haruko offers to teach him to swing and we get a cute scene between them. Naoto starts to notice that his dad has been acting strange with Haruko. To top it off a weird man, with huge eyebrows, named Amarao seems to know a lot about Haruko and Naotos head. One day Naoto gets upset with his dad about his relationship with Haruko and hits the TV with a bat at the same instance Kamon, Naotos dad, breaks down to the floor.. Naoto gets interrigated by Amarao who babbles on about some important stuff I dont want to give away, but the big this we learn is that a big bomb is heading for the city from space and Amarao wants Harukop to hit it out of the park. Naoto is in the room with his callapsed father and opens a cubbord to find his real father all dried up. He imediatly throws him in the bath and everything is ok again. Haruko refuses to swing at the bomb and drive Naoto up to the point wher!
e the bomb will land and pulls a "ba
The Amazing thing about this show is that it combines incredible animation, awesome action, bizarre comedy, and rightous lessons to create a very unique experiance. I cant begin to explain how this show makes me feel. It's soooooo WHACK, but you cant take your eyes off it. From South Park Parodies to Guitar Swinging Vixins this show has everything an Anime Need plus some extra stuff that will blow your mind.
