DVD Shopping Bag: Evil Dead 2013 Blu-ray

Is an extended cut is on the way?

With the announcement of a new Evil Dead film so many moons ago, I was skeptic. Another Hollywood rehash of a beloved classic. When I heard that the triad of producers had reunited to do it right, I was more hopeful. In fact I was down right pleased. Who better to relaunch the Evil Dead than Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert and Bruce Campbell? When I was given the chance to interview Bruce Campbell (read here), director Fede Alvarez (read here), and the “new Ash”, Jane Levy (read here) I’ll admit I was hooked into the hype. Sitting right next to Bruce Campbell and hearing him discuss “the Evil Dead Candy Bar” that this movie is going to be makes it tough not to buy into it. With all that in mind, I walked into the theater expecting a horror thrill ride.

What I absolutely loved about the Evil Dead is that is possessed no great monstrous creature. There was nothing there that was not of our every day world. Every scare, every kill, and every weapon was something that could hurt us. So with each slice, tear, or puncture, it felt real. Too often, horror filmmakers overreach for the extreme to terrify us. I often think of the Saw movies when it comes to this. Could I be in that situation? Possibly. However, it is highly unlikely. Could I cut myself with a box cutter or a knife? Yes. So when Mia is trapped between the two walls and that machete comes in and just cuts her a little bit, I feel it. It was those small moments that help the bigger ones deliver the horror.

When I walk out of a theater now, I usually have the same thought. Will this film play just as well on the small screen? More often than not, our theatrical experience is a one time thing (unless you come to The Colonial Theatre’s Fright Night Screenings). For me, some films are too big and cannot be contained on my big television. Inception suffered heavily from this, as I am sure Pacific Rim will. The Evil Dead was another story. It was incredible to see all the details and gore in 1080p. To clearly hear the sounds of the cabin and the spirits in the woods was an additional bonus. Much like its predecessor, the new Evil Dead belongs on your television.

Now that the film has arrived on DVD and Blu-ray, Evil Dead fans can really get to the meat of this new movie. Sony Pictures has supplied us with an incredible Blu-ray stocked with commentary and interviews. What I found surprising was that Sam Raimi is absent from these special features. Rob Tapert and Bruce Campbell are here, but the director of the original is not present. Granted, not many producers interject their opinions on Blu-rays, but he is pretty synonymous with the film.

Despite Raimi’s absence, director Fede Alvarez, Jane Levy and other members of the cast sit down with a complete film commentary. What I found a tad disheartening was the mention of so many deleted scenes and extended moments that were left out of the film. More than once, I heard either Jane Levy and Fede Alvarez mention a explanation or motivation for character (especially for Elizabeth Blackmore’s Natalie) that was cut for timing. What does all this mean? Particularly when there are no deleted scenes included on the Blu-ray? Yes, that’s right, yet another Evil Dead disc to buy, which fits with all other previous incarnations of the Evil Dead, again capturing the experience.

There is a lot to watch here and enjoy outside of Fede Alvarez’s new interpretation of the Evil Dead story. Jane Levy points out that this was indeed her first sex scene on film. Rob Tapert’s own son makes an appearance in the film. There is even an original Evil Dead prop appearing in this film. Those interested in the influence the original producers had on the film will discover where Alvarez finished a scene and where they pushed him to go further.

The Evil Dead 2013 is out now on Blu-ray and DVD.

I am waiting for the Director's Cut before buying Evil Dead...I was really surprised by how much I enjoyed it!

I was really surprised by how much I disliked the new Evil Dead.  I'm glad some here have enjoyed it, but for me, it was a real disappointment.

As bad as the acting was in the original, this one tops it without even trying really.  Jane Levy is the only performance that passes as acceptable.  Even though the characters in the original weren't all that fleshed out in the original film, the actors made me at least care (even slightly) for them.  I can't say that for anyone involved in this one.  The only character name I can even remember from this one was Mia.  I think her brother was Eric, maybe.  Only remembering that because of discussions with other Maniacs when the film came out.

I think we were supposed to care about Mia in this but I'm not really sure.  The whole drug-intervention angle turned me off immediately.  Just didn't care for that for whatever reason.

Then there's just the undenible charisma of Bruce Campbell.  His acting hisn't top-notch, but he has a ton of charisma and that goes a long way in him becoming the King of the B movies that he is today.

All that said, the blood and gore that was done with practical effects on set was amazing.  I'm sure some was enhanced with CGI, but it was refreshing to see it done for real as much as they could.  That's why I love Cabin the Woods so much.  And this should've been that same Cabin in the Woods type experience, only better, but it wasn't.

There was really only one good, creepy type scene.  I won't spoil it here, but it involved the bathroom and a broken mirror.  That scene and the tension was great...until they decided to ruin it was in the end with fast cuts for no reason.  Let the shit play out to where we can actually tell what the heck is going on, please!

End rant.

hrm. I guess I'll have to wait for the BR release with the cut scenes. Ah well. Dig the flick though.
