STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION Season 3 Blu-ray Details

Warp Factor 3!

Source: Paramount/ CBS

Have you been picking up the STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION Blu-rays? Despite every episode being on Netflix, I highly recommend picking up these Blu-rays. Revisiting the adventures of Picard, Riker, and Data and been a real treat. To top it all off, they have never looked better either. Check out Mania’s review of Season 2. Here is the press release for all the goodies and a “Best of Both Worlds” two pack that enables you to not have to wait a whole summer to relive the epic two-parter.

Continuing the series of high-definition collections celebrated by fans, STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION™ – THE THIRD SEASON and STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION – THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS will both arrive on Blu-ray Disc April 30 from CBS Home Entertainment and Paramount Home Media Distribution in separate must-have sets packed with all-new special features. Both collections are the result of the painstaking restoration of the renowned series that involved returning to the original film elements.  The results have critics raving that “this set will feel like you’re experiencing a brand-new show” (IGN).

Boasting an unprecedented reunion of Next Generation writers moderated by comedian and Star Trek fan Seth MacFarlane, this third season collection features an all-new feature entitled “Inside The Writer’s Room.”  Including fascinating discussion on the creation of the show’s acclaimed third season by some of today’s most visionary science fiction television writers, MacFarlane leads a panel that includes Ronald Moore, Brannon Braga, Naren Shankar and Rene Echevarria.  Plus, the collection is highlighted by an all-new multi-part documentary “Resistance is Futile: Assimilating The Next Generation,” which reveals behind-the-scenes insight on the making of Season Three, focusing on the drastic changes to the creative and writing staff leading to the arrival of new show runner Michael Piller.  Also, the set features a special tribute to Piller, including never-before-seen interviews with cast, crew, family members and industry colleagues who all discuss his lasting influence not only on the series, but also on the Star Trek franchise as a whole.  Rounding out the exclusive bonus material includes an all-new gag reel and newly produced commentary on select episodes.

The STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION – THE THIRD SEASON Blu-ray is a 6-disc collection featuring all 26 episodes of the third season.  Continuing to follow the remarkable voyages of the Starship Enterprise, the third season includes some of the most celebrated episodes in Star Trek canon.

STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION – THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS

Hailed by TV Guide as one of the best television episodes of all time*, STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION – THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS Blu-ray features a seamlessly edited, one-part, feature length 86 minute presentation of the classic two-part cliffhanger. In this fan favorite episode, Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) is captured and assimilated by the Borg.   Available in high-definition for the first time ever, a centerpiece to the release is a newly-produced documentary “Regeneration: Engaging the Borg.” Offering fans an in-depth exploration into the creation of The Next Generation’s most iconic villains, along with the making of the episode, the exclusive feature

One more thing I need, yet can't afford. Damn it all.

Out of all of Trek history (excluding the shoddy "Enterprise") I've only got Season 2 of TOS on Blu, and Season 3 of Voyager on  DVD.

At least the Blu version of TOS has a Tribbles disc, with the DS9 episode "Trials and Tribbleations."

I have both seasons 1 and 2 on Blu and couldn't recommend them more.  The restoration is simply amazing and the slightly altered/updated CGI adds a lot to this iconic series.  The special features are fantastic on these sets as well.

However, I can't help but look at this announcement as nothing more than an extra cash grab.  Why not just add BOBWP2 to the Third Season set as well as it's special features.  You can add in the additional cost to the third season set, but to release 2 separate sets seems ridiculous and unnessary.

All that said, I'll probably purchase both because I want all the special features.  And again, I'll likely be going to the theater for the special screening a week before these are released.

Now we have hit season 3 I think this may be the time to jump on the bandwagon and get some. S1 and s2 aren't high on my list (still had a few reaaly good episodes) but from s3 onward there are just shed loads of them.

Any news if DS9  will make it to Bluray?

That one I'd buy.

Kaziklu 2/11/2013 11:04:24 AM

Season one and 2 have maybe 18 good episodes between them. Season 3 it really started to take off. I'm happy to see this coming to bluray.

RobertTrate 2/11/2013 1:06:10 PM

not yet Jedibanner. I keep checking.

StarlightGuard 2/11/2013 5:03:04 PM

I'm betting Paramount will go through every Trek offering (minus the animated show) and stick it on Blu. Aren't they supposed to have all of TNG out on Blu this year alone?

almostunbiased 2/11/2013 5:45:42 PM

If these were inexpensive I would love to get them all, but wow huge bucks.

Miner49er 2/11/2013 6:12:01 PM

Bought the first two seasons. Will be picking this one up along with Season 1 of Enterprise which is slated for a March release as well. It was cool to revisit TNG after meeting the whole cast last year the local con.
